Quetico Solo w dog McIntyre Woodside and Sunday Lakes
by TomT
We will spend three nights on this small island. We hit it off real good and both had excellent fishing here. Rich likes the fireplace and we gathered and processed lots of wood. He did most of that work. We shared fish dinners and he made a real good pizza one night. The smallmouth fishing was off the charts for this time of year. Woodside is very remote and not on a main travel route. It only has one campsite so it doesn’t see many visitors.
We also caught walleye and those were the only fish we ate. While trolling a crank bait along the east shore we both experienced the phenomenon of fighting fish and being blown back by the wind. We would troll for a minute or two, fight a fish and get blown back. We couldn’t make any progress! These were mainly smallmouth bass between 14 and 17 inches and great fighters and leapers. I’m sure I lost bigger ones here and Rich did land a few 18 inchers. Also, in the north end the smallies had a reddish hue to them. i’ve never seen that coloration before. This pic of the smallmouth in the boat is not a red one. What I caught in the north end were rusty looking. Pretty bizarre actually.
