Day 8 of 9
Friday, June 16, 2006. Mostly sunny with temps in the low 80s.
After a quick breakfast, we once again packed up and headed south. We broke camp at 9:30 am. We would be crossing the Maligne Portage and working our way down the Maligne River to Tanner Lake. This would set us up for an easy out the following morning. The temperature and humidity were noticeably higher today. This seemed to bring out the bugs which had been almost nonexistent up until now. Around 2pm we reached our target campsite on May Island. It was occupied. We paddled over to the dam on the eastern end of May Island to rest and have some lunch. After a quick inspection, we decided to camp at this location since it had adequate tent pads and we were bushed from a tough day of paddling and portaging. It was however the buggiest site we had been on. We ate the last of our remaining food – mac & cheese and wild rice. Good planning Barley!
After lunch some of the boys went for a swim to cool off. Later that evening we enjoyed a nice camp fire. We stayed up talking until the mosquitoes chased us into our tents.
