Monday 8/12/19, Day Four:

I was up early and took some pictures of a quite unremarkable sunrise. Then I walked to the lodge on the little path through the woods, as I needed to connect to the wi-fi. There were some pretty mushrooms by the path, along with bright green ferns.

After breakfast we walked down to the outfitter building. Jack and Fresca, the lodge dogs, were happy to greet us. Anna has never met a dog she didn't like, and these are sufficiently friendly to make a very fine dog-hugging experience.

This seemed to be a good day to go for a float in the lake. Anna has a long-beloved floatie (we cannot remember how many years she has had it, but it is obviously a floatie for a child, not for a tall, lanky teenager), called "Orca". My preferred vehicle is the "Funky Flower", and Grandpa was kind enough to get out his air compressor and get them both inflated for us. It was a beautiful morning for a float on Poplar Lake.

We floated down past the lodge, and then Anna decided that she would like to try the SUP.

I floated around with her for a while and then decided I had had enough. So I went ashore near the outfitter cabin. Anna kept on paddling around, getting farther and farther away from us. We watched as she was over on the other side of the lake, and suddenly she dumped off the board and landed, sitting on a big rock. She seemed OK, took a minute to regroup, and then suddenly realized that the paddle board was drifting away from her. It was sort of fun to watch her swim to retrieve the board, get herself upright again and start heading back. I went to the cabin, showered and dressed, and by the time I had some lunch ready she and Grandpa were coming back, laughing and chatting. She didn't have any injury from her fall except for a slightly scraped elbow, but I think her pride was a bit hurt. Grandpa got the only picture of her "event".

After a delicious lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches, sliced tomatoes, and black cherries, Anna and Grandpa went hiking to collect some downed wood so that we could have a small campfire. I opted to just rest in the cabin, reading my book (William Kent Krueger's ORDINARY GRACE--I recommend it!).

This evening we had a cookout with hot dogs, peaches, and s'mores. Anna likes to put a peach slice on her s'more instead of the chocolate--she says it ends up tasting like a warm peach cobbler. If you haven't tried it, you should. Really quite yummy with a slice of ripe peach!

We were chased in from our cookout by a light rain, and that became heavier during the evening. So we decided to play games. We tried "Anomia", but we found that it was really no challenge for Anna with her quick teenage reaction times. Then we played "Quiddler" and Anna won that handily, too. After Grandpa went to bed, Anna and I played some "Perquackey", which is our favorite word game. I went to bed about 11:30 and I know there was a light on in the loft for quite a long time after that.
