Relaxing at Rockwood Volume 5
by Spartan2
Our last full day in the cabin. Breakfast was low-key and Anna seemed a bit glum. After one game of "Perquackey", she and Grandpa decided that they would paddle down to the west end of Poplar Lake and back. We often see loons on this route, and I knew she had photography in mind.
I opted to stay back and get some of the packing-up done, thinking about our departure the next morning. They stopped to admire a pair of brown frogs on the log at our "beach". And then they were off!
When they returned, Anna was very excited. There was only one loon, but it cooperated well for her, and she made many shots! Actually well over 75, and most of them were amazing! She was particularly pleased that this loon did some preening while she was watching, and she loves this photo, which she calls "loon foot."
Here are a few more:
As Jerry Vandiver would sing, "Thank you Mister Loon."
After lunch we concentrated upon packing our bags. We also read, rested, and relaxed. I didn't check to make sure that Anna was getting packed when she was quiet up in the loft. That would come back later to be a "situation." Eventually we played a game of "Five Crowns" and Grandpa had every kind of possible good luck.
Supper was pork tenderloin, baked sweet potatoes, and applesauce. It was followed by another game of "Five Crowns". This time Anna won big. We enjoy this game, but there is a huge element of luck involved, and it seems like that luck often favors just one person in a particular game.
Finally, it was time for one last campfire so that we could use up the last of the marshmallows.
Our late-night game was "Rummikub".
Shortly after this game we had a mini-crisis. Anna mentioned that the window in the loft wouldn't close completely. Grandpa was trying to help, and he took off the screen, allowing a multitude of mosquitoes and gnats into the room. Our girl had a small meltdown, very upset because she had not finished with her packing (perhaps hadn't even begun--I didn't go up there to check on it) and she didn't want to go in the room with all of the bugs. OR sleep there!! I was more than a little bit upset to find out that all of the time she had been "packing" in the afternoon, she was reading a book! A glass of milk and some time settled things down, and then Grandpa opened up the sofa bed so that she could sleep downstairs. It was very late when we finally got to bed, and everyone was frazzled and exhausted.
