Wind & Rain Magnets in Quetico
by TrailZen
The clear evening was not an omen of good weather to come. Cloud cover returned and we had steady wind and rain all night. Exited the tent at 7:00 in full rain gear, and prepared and ate breakfast under the fly. Temperature was in the upper 40s, and the sky solid gray with rain and mist in waves. We'd be spending another day on Payne. Morning was spent in the tent playing Farkle, reading McManus, and napping. We had a break in the showers around 1:00 pm, so had soup, crackers, & cheese for lunch. Temps had made it into the low 50s.
Around 3:00 pm we had mostly blue skies and sun was shining on the tent. We spread gear to dry and had afternoon coffee to celebrate. I roamed the island and found several late-blooming flowers.
Had a nice dinner of ham & spinach in mashed potatoes. At 7:30 or so the lake was glass, and we paddled over to Ahsin Bay's cliff to see the pictographs, then paddled back to a dry tent and settled in for the night.
