The Long Trip
by Spartan2
2 lakes, 1 portage (trip to Sawbill Outfitters.)
This was an interesting day. Before we were out of the tent we heard a loud buzzing around all sides. A hummingbird evidently thought our yellow rain fly was an enormous flower! I truly wish we had seen it!
A little dozing, then we awoke to rain--really a mist--on the tent. Got up around seven and had breakfast, cooked on the small stove. We ate in sunshine, with still water and reflection views. Packed up and paddled in misty drizzle to the portage to Sawbill Lake, and down Sawbill to the outfitters, where we:
bought a little food
bought fuel for the stove
bought a better rain suit for me
bought showers!
bought new post cards and mailed others
bought lunch
We left there warmer and drier, but went right out into a steady rain! Paddled back to our "home" on Alton Lake.
In the afternoon the mist stopped and there was a beautiful calm. The reflections were wonderful, and I took a photo or two, including a panorama.
There were lots of jumping fish, fishing loons, paddling ducks, etc. Neil chopped wood and we hoped we could have a fire to cook supper. At 3 PM it was 60 degrees and a few patches of blue sky overhead teased me into hoping for a clear day ahead.
When I went down to photograph a duck in the bay a shower began and it was scurry!! scurry!! to get pads and things off the clothesline and in the tent again!
The storm blew by quickly and Neil went out to get a fire going. While he was working with it, I went up the hill and saw a large spruce grouse. (chubby dum-dum). [Family joke about that.] She wasn't cooperative about being photographed, but it was nice to see her. They are such large and docile birds.
Rain started again (!) after supper and continued off and on all night. The wind really picked up during the night, too.
