6/28/80 Day Ten:

We were up at 5 AM (in spite of my earlier comment, we did NOT set any kind of alarm) and on the lake by 6. My book describes the conditions as "very choppy" and says I was "hysterical." Probably accurate, as it was more wind and waves than we were comfortable handling. Slow progress can seem like no progress in a canoe!

Just after Harrison Narrows we spotted a man on his dock by his boat. We paddled up to the dock and asked him if he would tow us to Crane Lake. He was a very nice older man. He went and got a companion to go along, and they tied our canoe to the boat with ropes. I have never been so glad to ride in a small boat on choppy water in my life!

We paid him $10, which doesn't sound like much now, but it was the price of a cabin for the night, and well worth it! We must have checked into a motel at Crane Lake, as the last entry in the journal says, "Hot shower at the motel. Great!"
