2021 BWCA Wildfires Force a Sylvania Trip
by Ausable
I awoke at 3:30 AM to a terrifying thunderstorm with driving, drenching rain. Water splashed up under the tent's rainfly and onto the tent's fabric and bug netting. The violent storm lasted for more than an hour. I prayed constantly.
I got up at 7 AM, readjusted the tarp, and hung up some wet stuff to dry. After a breakfast of bacon and eggs, we wiped down the tents, paying special attention to the zippers. The tent sites are well-worn and devoid of leaf litter, so the lower parts of the tents were quite dirty.
Jack-in-the-Pulpit fruits and red shelf fungus:
We went fishing from 11 AM to 5 PM. We fished the entire lake both deep and shallow. Jim caught one eater-size Large Mouth Bass in the shallows off the island's SE shore, but we had to release it, of course. I had what I thought was a very strong take of a jerk bait while fishing along the southern shore, but the bait was released and it was barely on the hook when I reeled it in. We had to contend with a fairly strong wind all day long. The fishing was quite frustrating, but it was a beautiful day.
We had lunch at the other campsite on the lake. It is a fine site with an easier landing. There was no further rain since the thunderstorm.
For dinner we had Cache Lake asparagus soup with wild rice and vegetables, pouched chicken added to it, Cache Lake frying pan dill bread, and Cache Lake lemon cream pudding for dessert. What a feast; we were stuffed. After dinner, we spent our last evening at the end of the peninsula star-gazing from a log jutting out from shore. We could see the entire eastern half of the sky plus Jupiter and Saturn – spectacular! Jupiter is so bright that it easily reflects off the smooth surface of the lake. We relished the final campfire.
