Day 7 of 7
Sunday, June 24, 2007 6 miles and 2 portages. Up at 6 for breakfast and pack up to leave. 1st morning we had to pack up wet. On the water a little after 7. Paddle back down Bunny to Leano and to our exit. Found that the culvert had been repaired and shortened our carry back by 200 rods. Loaded and back to Red Lake. Showered, settled up with Goldseekers, and headed home. Arrived back in So. MN about 12:15 am Monday Morning.

Observations and thoughts on Woodland Caribou Park: In a lot of ways very similar to BW. We covered a small part of the park in mid June, during a very wet period for the area. Some of the differences we found were: noticeably fewer people, less soil, smaller trees, very little underbrush. The Portages tended to be shorter(at least on our route) were very wet and more like the little used ones found in the BW. Campsites had well established fire pits, many had room for only one tent and we saw only a couple that would accommodate more than 2. Weather was very typical of N. MN. Fishing was similar, however the maps show NO depth info and we do not carry a depth finder. The only fishing info we had was what species were present in the lakes we traveled from the outfitter. Road access is limited to a few entry points on the SE part of the park and the road can become impassable in some years. Many canoers fly in and we did see a number of float planes overhead. There are also a number of outpost fishing cabins located in the park. There were none on our trip. Cost was very similar to BW with added park Fees($14/person/night), added gas, and added travel time. At this time there are no reservations needed for Park Access. Also found the staff at Woodland Caribou Park very helpful and accommodating( returned one phone call at 8:00 PM on Friday evening to get us current conditions). Maps were 1:50,000 scale gov't topo maps that do NOT show portages or campsites. There is a park map available that shows the portages. We paid to have the outfitter draw in portages, some campsite, and items of interest on our topo maps. Was it worth the additional 500 miles, extra 10 hours of traveling, and extra planning to go to WCP rather than to BW or Q? Yes, for us it was and we will return but we are also not done exploring the BW and Q.
