Day 4 of 5
Monday, June 25, 2007 After breakfast we broke camp and paddled just a short trip to the other campsite. After three nights in one spot it’s nice to move. I have done a lot of trips moving every day and I am fine now with base camping but I do like the adventure of setting up a new camp.

The boys have been great but they are about ready to head for Ely and are looking forward to tomorrow. The rest of us are looking forward to an ice-cold drink. We have our fourth day of great weather.

In the afternoon my brother decides to take my canoe out by himself to fish a little. After about half an hour my nephew hears a yell and hollers at me that his dad has capsized. Sure enough. He is so far down the lake I can hardly see him. We tell the boys to stay put and we paddle the barge to the rescue. In 40 some years of paddling I have yet to capsize a canoe and I am wondering what happened. When we get to him he is hanging on to the swamped canoe and my six-year old son’s life jacket. He failed to take his own! I jump overboard and help corral a few floating items and swim the boat to shore.

My brother is okay but his glasses are gone, his fishing pole is gone, my tackle box is gone, two ropes are gone, and my camera is floating in a pelican box which I always keep tied to the canoe. The $30 I paid for that pelican box was a bargain, not a drop got in! My brother has no explanation for the mishap and has no idea how it happened. I am thankful he is okay and the weather is good. The water is not too cold.

In spite of the capsize we have a good last night and a beautiful sunset.
