We're a group of two heading out for nine nights at the very end of August. Entering via Prairie Portage and Agnes Lake.
We are thinking about paddling up Agnes then over to Russell and Sturgeon then down to a pick-up in the Boundary Waters (via Minn/McAree). Do we have enough time for this?
Another thought is to go up Agnes into McKenzie Bay of Kawnipi, up to McKenzie Lake and over through Ferguson and Cache River to the other end of Kawnipi. I have not seen that northeastern corner of the park, and am interested in its remoteness. Any thoughts on that stretch of McKenzie lake back to Kawnipi via Ferguson and Cache River, particularly in late August? Would there be some time to spend around Russell/Chatterton before coming back down Agnes or Kahshahpiwi?
I've been up/down Kahshahpiwi and Agnes before, and liked the area up at the top of that loop (around Metacryst, Chatterton, etc). So trying to enjoy some time up there and/or see some more remote areas around McKenzie/Ferguson.
I'd call all of those pretty aggressive with minimal layover time and moving every day. The second one with the Russell side trip would be brutal to do in that timeframe in my opinion.
Single portaging would help, however I still think you might be biting off more than you'd like to chew.

I started this loop through Cache Bay, but you could start at PP and skip Cache Bay on the way out heading into the Man Chain instead.
Going east from Agnes through Louisa to McEwen Creek to the Maligne River is very scenic and little traveled. Coming back through the Man Chain is lovely as well.
