Great report, thanks for sharing. I had the pleasure of leaving that Tuesday and being out there with my wife and four shorties for the storm on Tuesday night, whoa!

Needless to say, it was a memory maker!

that was a really nice trip. glad you were able to have the trip with just your wife. it would be interesting to have her write up her side of the story!

great pictures, too.

Thank you Anthony for the superb trip report. I admire you appreciation for the park. It is the way I look at my experiences while canoeing the beautiful country of BWCA. Can't wait to put in next Friday. My daughter and I tripped together several times in the past. She is 18 now and still urges me to make our annual trip. I am looking forward to those challenges and rewards at the end of the portage, day, morning. I am only hoping to have such a great trip as yours.
Iron lake fishing spots had been researched by me on this forum. I am planning in and out EP 19. 3 nights on Iron. Where to stay, where to fish?
Help me out.

P.S. You have a treasure in your wife.
Peace.

Stuart River EP 17 - June 2017

I am headed to Iron lake with my wife in July, your two videos and trip report has certainly influenced our first choice for a camp site! Thanks for sharing.

You can't go wrong with the Island site by Peterson Bay, but the sites on Three Island and the point site closest to Curtain Falls are gems as well. There's a lot of good sites on Iron and on Stuart as well. Are you heading in at EP 16, 19 or Little Vermillion?

Thanks for sharing about your trip! Going as a couple is so great...my husband and I have been going for 18 years. I've been to parts of those areas, but not up the Stuart. Now you have me even more interested!

Thanks for the report- sounds like you guys had a great time! I was on the Stewart-Fox portage last fall and marveled at the thick carpet of moss that seemed to blanket the woods for half the portage. Also, I remember the washout part well: canoe and pack on my shoulders while trying to balance on bent-over brush resting on a rotten semi-floating log.

Good for you two for taking time away from the kids. You'll be able to bring them on awesome family trips later on.

My wife and I are also fond of dirtbagging it in the back of the truck the night before, so I can echo your thoughts on that one.

Dirtbaggin' it! Awesome. You can't beat waking up at the EP, choking down an energy bar and banana, then hitting the trail.

I'll be dirtbagging it in the car for my solo trip in July and back in the truck for an October trip with my dad and 6 year old son. Thanks for the kind words.

Your trip report really brought me back. I've done that route a few times but it has been a while. Your report makes me want to get back to that area. I especially like that Dahlgren portage too. I know what you mean about having to keep your eyes on the ground as it is so easy to get distracted by those magnificent White Pines! I also have a trooper of a wife. When you mentioned your wife was carrying two packs down the the Stuart River entry, it really sounded like something my wife would do also. We are lucky to have such great paddling partners. Thanks for sharing and taking me back to those spots.

30Smoke: "I thoroughly enjoy your report and video. I'm heading up that way with my cousin and I think we may try to get to Iron in one day. Is it doable from the stuart river to Iron in one day, or should we go from Moose/Portage? But it looked like great fun and really appreciate the tip on the waterfall off stuart lake portage - looks pretty! I've read your other reports and really enjoyed them also - thanks for sharing!"

Oh yeah! We thought about going all the way to Iron and easily could have made it in 6-7 hours. We just wanted to fish Stuart, and checkout the portage over to the Dahlgren River. The 320 rod portage out of Stuart is a beast, might be tough after a long trip up the Stuart river. From Stuart to Iron took us about two hours. Lots of wolf sign back there, it was a little scary because my wife and I were separated on the long portage by about 10 minutes and I was seeing fresh wolf tracks in my wife’s footsteps, following her briefly. I was breaking some speed records after seeing that! Have fun up there and thanks for reading the report.

Lol, it's funny you mention that, because we discussed in the car on the way home. Let's just say her report wasn't as optimistic as mine...

Wow, I'm glad you came out alright. I was hoping I didn't hear about any widowmakers or accidents caused by that storm.
