I like the story here. But a couple things don’t add up. I was out on Lac La Croix this last weekend and found the ice to be running from 18 inches to 26 inches. This is with a lot of snowfall that we had this year. When you have a lot of snow on the ice it acts like insulation. To drive on a lake you need 14+ inches of ice. The Dawson is now a snowmobile trail that is used daily and by Zups in the summer. The main reason it's not used by the reserve anymore is not because of the ice but the fact they now have a road coming in from Atikokan.

Thanks for the reminder.

Been on that GMC Suburban and that old school bus many times. What a road.

It's been a while since we last traveled on the Dawson Portage. Doesn't sound like there have been any improvements to the road since last I traveled it.

I think everyone should have to experience the Dawson just once.

In 1968 six of us from Camp Easton single portaged the Dawson portage while on a six day trip on the Namakan river. It was long but I don't remember it as difficult, just long. To be young again.

PS. I still have my map from that trip, Fisher NO 107, cost 35c.
