Ripple,

Were you able to take the portage from Lujenida to Fredrick? I have heard it does not exist, any first hand account would be appreciated.

I am planning a laker trip there this spring. Thanks for posting your pics. I am looking forward to some rich red trout fillets fried with crispy skin, fish tacos, in chowder and for breakfast....

I also liked the anecdote about the paddles. I am the kind of person who feels like he has to help people who paddle backwards. I have probably told at least 8 people to turn their paddles around. Until now I never knew if they appreciated the help or not.

ripple-

Where did you get your mocassins? Do they hold up fine in the rain? I like them...

Our next trip this summer is planned for your area- I'm gonna pick your brain pretty soon for a long loop trip!

I found them on line a few years ago- they are soft leather with a padded sole. They dry pretty quick and them soften up again- with the moccasin molding to our foot. We love them at camp!

I will try to remember where I found them.

added- found them! This is the link for women's- but they have men's and kids as well.
Minnetonka Fringe Moccasins

This is The Find search for them too- The Find search for Minnetonka Moccasins+

Thanks for sharing your trip report. I felt like I was living your great trip. Nice picture of the shore in your setting sun picture. Great to hear you caught a fish!

Great report. Thanks for sharing.

Wine is definitely a "clink" worthy lake. ;-} Was there about this time last year. Glad you had a great trip & thanks for sharing your story & photos.
Ozarker 05/23/2011 08:22PM
What a neat report. I've gone north 7-8 times with the guys and twice with the Mrs. I have to say that the ones with the Mrs were the best. Didn't catch as much fish, but she sure does snuggle better than those stinky old men.

Sounds like you and Ed had a great time. Thanks for the report.

Hey Ripple....Where did you get the Beef Bourgonion/what brand (e.g. Mountain House)? I've never been a big fan of a lot of the beef freeze dried meals but that sounds delicious. Not that I need to add any more food to the pack, but could eliminate one of the many chicken meals.

P.S. Don't be too embarrassed by the paddle situation, I did the same thing last year. How ya supposed to know when you've never used a bent paddle before?! Sure makes for smoother paddlin' when it's used properly though :-)

2K10- the Beef Bourgonion was my own!! I made it and then dehydrated. I forget if it is one of the recipes I posted in the cookbook- but if it's not there I will add it since it turned out so well.

I hate looking silly out there- but I was sure someone else had done the same thing at some point! Yep sure was a nicer paddle when we turned them around!

added- recipe just was posted!

What a great trip Ripple, thanks for sharing. Nothing better than spending time alone in the woods with the love of your life and enjoying every bit of it. Sounds like some great fishing and weather too! Green with envy, 40 days until I get to experience the same thing - it can't come quick enough!!
Zulu 05/23/2011 09:47AM
Thanks for the Trip Report Ripple. I really enjoyed it. Great fishing, food, weather and company and even a full moon! I am very happy that you and Ed had a wonderful trip. I like the clinking of the wedding rings part.
Good thinking on Ed's part to switch tactics for trout.

Thanks again for the speedy posting of the report. There hasn't been many new ones posted recently.

Now get to work planning and organizing the next trip:)

What a great trip! It's nice to see a married couple who love each other and each other's company in the BWCA!

Thanks for the recipe, sounds great!

I felt silly too when my guy pointed out I had the paddle the wrong way, oh well, lesson learned and I'm sure we aren't the only ones who have done the same thing :-) Nice of the other guy to point it out for you!

I did make me feel good when every night my husband said "there is not one guy on this lake who is happier than me in my tent tonight""

Aw...super sweet. What a fun, memorable trip. Those small, off the beaten path lakes have some sort of magic.

Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful report, Ripple, thanks!

I, too, loved the clinking rings and was deeply warmed by how special your marriage is.

I'm planning on being through that area in July myself and might just have to check out that site.

Did you use that ice to keep the wine cold? So glad you didn't have to carry that Pinot Noir back on the long portage!

Thanks again.

I used to wear camp moccasins too! Lost one in a move, and have been holding on to the other one hoping to find the mate some day. Perfect shoe for camp.

Thanks for sharing!

Bravo trip report! I took two trips into the BW with my wife before we were married back in the 80's and they certainly brought us closer together like no other vacation could.

Sadly the bugs and general hardship is something she won't do anymore. But you two sound like that's the perfect way to get away from it all. It's really nice to see. Hope you take many more together.

Just an aside- I had written this report and within a few days had gleaned from someone elses post regarding Michael Furtman's work that he had a rather strict policy against using his quotes- per his website.

Since I had already posted the trip report I wanted to contact him to request his permissin/beg his forgiveness. I chose Facebook to message him (couldn't find a contact on his website). He responded today- very sweetly- just thought I would share!

Dear Mr. Furtman

I am contacting you to ask your permission to use 2 of your lines from Boundary Waters Fishing Guide. I did not know your copyright when I posted a trip report on the BWCA.com forum.

I have linked the report here- http://www.bwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=trip.report_view&sel_trp_id=2404

If you find the 2 lines used objectionable- I will delete them immediatly.

Please know that I very much enjoyed your work and my husband and I had so much fun using your advice to find lake trout.

Erin

From Michael Furtman
Erin, somehow I missed your message, and came across it just today. Of course I don't mind you quoting me! I read the story of your canoe trip, and felt as if I were along for the paddle. I'm glad you were able to catch a laker, and pleased that my book may have been of some help! I've never been into Wine Lake, but by the looks of it, the lake trout are especially fat! Thanks for the nice story. I really enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed your report. I wish I could do a trip with my wife, but that's not her thing. It would be a real bummer to get all the way out to a place like that and find it full.
alpine525 05/24/2011 08:44AM
ripple - What a beautiful trip report...I thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband and I have been tripping in the BW for many years - we have only gone with each other. It's "our alone time" - we wouldn't have it any other way!

I know!! It is a bigger risk than most other areas because it is so hard to get to and there are so few alternate campsite options once you head that way.

I talked to Sawbill before we went out and they had not heard of anyone headed that way so I felt a bit better- but I was worried through out the whole day as we portaged that awful 480 rods. When we talked to people later- they were impressed that there were so many of us at that lake at this time of the year- they thought that was pretty unusual.

Great report!! You've got a future as a writer I think. I am going to have my wife read this to see if it will help convince her to go to the bw with me. Maybe if I explain there be no 480 rod portage in the trip I plan! I too really enjoyed the "wonder twins" reference. I hope Ed doesn't take it wrong if I say it is really cute! Romance is alive!! Pete

Ripple - I enjoyed reading your report. Favorite part: hero rings unite. I love that. Great photos. I plan on heading to Wine Lake on Aug 1 and my two biggest fears are getting there to an occupied lake, or occupying the lake and wrecking the experience for a fellow BWCA.comer. 3rd biggest fear: sharks. Thanks for the report. Have a great summer.

Ripple and sidekick Ed,
Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed the part about the backwards paddle, everyone that knows little about bent shafts that picks mine up do it wrong, so you are in good company. :)
Thanks for all the detail and insight into your trip. It was a very nice trip and looked to be a re-charging trip for you two. Nice Photos also.

Not to many people know that my really big, burley, tough guy- is kind of a chick at heart! When we were dating I liked to tease him and call him my girlfriend because of how sensitive and emotional he was. HE was the one who started the ring clink! He wouldn't take offense at it being cute really!!
BearBrown 06/03/2011 04:41AM
Great trip report and plus one for the minnetonka moccasins. I wear a different style, but they are great. My pair just made their third trip.
