Extremely enjoyable read. As I am catching up on my reading I knew this would be a good one, and I was right on.

Your pictures were terrific and placed well, but movies too? We may have to start a Director's award with the number of reports that are including that great feature.

Jan, a nicely done report, where I admit, originally thinking that you had limited options to bail if so inclined, for any reason. But, you enjoyed it all and have a great experience to recall, although I hope your next one will have a bit less wind.

Thanks for sharing.
Boppa

Very nice report. Thank you.
kanoes 10/03/2011 11:18PM

ss? sometimes photos should remain anonymous...to peak interest. :)

I'm just going to steal Erin's words. Ditto to everything she said.

Loved the mixed media method for the report. although some names near some of the photos would have been appreciated.
bhouse46 09/27/2011 07:22AM
Great report! I cashed out from Kawnipi and came back through Agnes on my attempt at this route. I did the Man chain to the Sag, highly recommended.
You inspire me to make the effort again, and to stick with it. And to take a chair. :-)
kanoes 06/18/2013 07:46PM
quote mcsweem: "Very nice report Jan. How many total miles and portages did you do?"
150 miles and about 40 portages in 12 days. not too bad for a 52 year old. :)
cowdoc 09/20/2011 06:42PM
Good job k-man!
SunCatcher 09/20/2011 07:41PM
Jan, I read this from front to back and sometime...I want to hear the inbetween stuff! Great Trip, Proud of you,
SunCatcher
Savage Voyageur 09/20/2011 07:44PM
Thanks Jan, I opened every picture and video. It was just like I was there. You captured it great. I'm thinking trip report winner.
OBX2Kayak 09/20/2011 07:56PM
Excellent TR. You capture the essence of a solo trip.
nojobro 09/20/2011 08:07PM
Thanks for taking me along on your tropic.

Do you keep your pen and paper handy? Where? I found on my trip last weekend that I wanted to write stuff down right when it happened, but didn't want to sit and do it later. If I had had it handier I may have done just that. I also wanted a watch. I wonder how long it took me to do my hiking.
airmorse 09/20/2011 09:54PM
Had a smile on my face the whole time I read your report. How did you like the Sierra Design tent. I love mine.
fitgers1 09/20/2011 07:21PM
Great job Jan. What an accomplishment to be proud of. Good read and photos.
bapabear 09/20/2011 08:23PM
That trip had a little bit of everything and was an interesting read. I don't envy the wind troubles but would love to try something like that myself someday, God willing. I'm thinking the group of guys you ran into and spent some time with would be a real welcome moment during a long solo trip. Looks like quite a group - Elvis especially. Thanks for sharing your trip, your thoughts and your humor in this report!
wawasee 09/21/2011 06:35AM
Wow what a trip! Kanoes I saw one gentleman had a Purdue Jacket on was he from Indiana? I'm glad you didn't dump it in the wind. Great trip report and excellent video!
billconner 09/20/2011 06:37PM
Well done!
BearWhoSwims 09/20/2011 07:18PM

First the heat, then the snow and THE WIND!!!

Luv it!! Great trip...congrats!!
Pikehunter 09/20/2011 10:33PM
Nice!
I could almost feel the wind while watching those videos.
Kendra 09/21/2011 08:58AM
Jan, can I request there be a "Story Time With Jan" at wingnight? We will set up the chairs and you can be the guest speaker.

This was a great trip report but I find myself wanting to hear more!

I LOL really hard when I read the "Leave my Sh!t alone!" part. I have the first need and could so picture that hose, now sprinkler shooting out.

I am very happy for you being able to accomplish THE trip.
eglath 09/21/2011 10:52AM
Well done...very impressive!!
Trix 09/21/2011 11:29AM
Awesome Jan! Great photos! Was right there with you during those wind video's. I am sure they don't do justice to what you had to endure. You are one brave soul and I commend you on an adventure of a lifetime.
So looking forward to hearing more at Wingnight!
You the Man!!!!

mc2mens 10/07/2011 12:41PM

Great trip report Jan, it would take me a month to do that trip because I saw at least 100 spots in your pictures that I would have to fish.
arctic 09/20/2011 07:15PM
I enjoyed your report, Kanoes. I know that route well, and you certainly passed through some fine country!

nice to meet you. that was probably a good decision...the water was so low up there.
Primitiveman 06/09/2013 08:48PM
Thanks for the bump Kanoes. Enjoyed the whole report, every word. Did you fish? Is the big one the border route IF to GM?
Jon
kanoes 06/09/2013 03:36PM
i guess ill bump for a new read too. ;-)

International Falls to Grand Marias via the Voyageur route including Grand Portage. I did it in 1975 as a 14 year old in a church group and it changed my life.
Jon
mcsweem 06/17/2013 09:20PM
Very nice report Jan. How many total miles and portages did you do?
kanoes 10/30/2011 04:16PM
thanks ducks and boppa!

for this loop i would break my vow of never repeating a trip. id love to slow down and spend 18 days on it some time.
Ho Ho 09/30/2011 09:22PM
Good report. It was fun running into you on the Falls Chain. I was sorry we didn't think to take a picture at the time. We thought about you in the following days of rougher weather, and when we got home and saw via Spot that you were windbound. Smart to play it safe in those conditions!
Papa09 07/22/2013 03:20PM
Still checking daily for this years trip report. Always enjoy reading anything that kanoes writes.
TomT 09/22/2011 08:03PM
That's quite the trip. Battling wind is a bear ain't it? I know exactly what you mean when you say "white knuckle". I only had a fraction of the wind problems that you had though. It can get pretty hairy out on big water knowing that if you dump it will be a long ways to shore.

I would also like to know more about your food. Were there any items you could have left home? And how'd that seat treat your butt? Cool video too. Thanks for the report.

I really enjoyed the video clips with narration - added a great perspective to the report.

If you do story time at wing night - can someone video, pretty please??

Got any observations on what your outfit did well and what you'd change next time? Were you glad you took the chair? HOW DID YOUR FOOD last?

Thanks for sharing Jan - it was really really fun to watch your progress and imagine what you were seeing.
Beemer01 09/21/2011 12:36PM
Nice trip - enjoyed the report and pictures!
snakecharmer 09/21/2011 12:52PM
Nicely done k-man. Welcome back!
AndySG 09/21/2011 04:33PM
THE Trip is a very appropriate title. Wow Jan, I am totally impressed. Consider yourself blessed to have been given the opportunity to do this. Thanks to you, I can't wait for my next solo adventure.

Great narrative, pictures and videos in the report. BTW, the beard is a good look for you. Still have it?
Grumpy 09/21/2011 12:24PM
Very well done! On Monday the 12th, I was at my sons football game when the wind hit. All I could think of was you in the Q. Glad you made it back safe.
jb in the wild 09/21/2011 01:49PM
Nice job Jan one more adventure this year, Wing Night!

JB
bojibob 09/21/2011 03:46PM
Awesome Jan! You did somewhere north of 150 miles and did around 40 portages. Not a trip for the meek and mild. I'm sure you inspired many to try this route or at least add it to the dream or bucket list.
rlhedlund 09/21/2011 05:21PM
Fantastic. Wish I could make it to Wing Night to hear the stories.
nctry 09/21/2011 02:29PM
Had the same snow/sleet thing happen at home. I was thinking of you then. The videos were a good addition to your report. Glad you included a little humor and all. Welcome back and see ya at Wing Night. First thing I thought when you were on the Chat the other night is Am OK!
Spartan2 09/21/2011 07:01PM
Enjoyed reading your report, Jan. What an adventure!

But I don't agree that THE Trip is a good title. Because you will have to top it (you don't think so now, perhaps, but I think I know you well enough to predict that you will, in time, have to top it) and then what on earth will you call that one?? LOL!!

Great trip. Glad you are safe from all of that and able to share it with us. And glad that you had so many satisfying moments.

Beautiful photos--it seemed odd to see Curtain Falls with so little water. We have always been there in the spring.

Enjoyed the report Jan!
Damn, now I'm gonna have to do it!
ryebread26 09/22/2011 10:40AM
great TR. im planing on doing that route someday!
NorthwoodsHeaven 09/22/2011 06:45PM
Great report. thanks for sharing
kanoes 09/22/2011 08:20PM
the gel seat helped much, i just had to stop once an hour or so to recenter the gel in the seat (per instructions), and the instructions were right on...that must be done.

all other gear worked well. i am glad i took the campstool

food? im off the MH bandwagon now...i had to force myself to eat it. ill be back to the knorrs and additives plan next trip. im going to take cheese next time too and softshells again. clifs builders bars are really good, they will be packed again. packed too many cashews and pistacios. i only had 4 cups of coffee the entire trip but the coffee didnt weigh much.

glad i packed 2 sets of long johns. first set got soaked on the basswood river portages...it was raining and i preferred getting wet from rain to getting wet from sweat.

my big water (waves) paddling skills really improved on this trip...i now know my absolute limitations.

learned much this time around. ill learn more next time too.

Great job! Really liked how you wrote things in a quick, but interesting manner. That wind was something. I don't envy you there.
