Nice report. You are in WAY better shape than I am! :) Very impressive. You should be proud of your accomplishment.

Super Cool trip. Defiantly a bucket list item! Thanks for the Trip Report.

Well very close! The picture was taken on Jenny Lake; Teewinot Mnt. is in the background.

Wow. Personally, I would have camped before tackling the Grand Portage. And you must have cruised the GP. It took me that long with one night of gear/food and no canoe,

Thank you all for the continued positive remarks. It is certainly appreciated. Paddling season is on the horizon!

Impressive!!

The Trumpter Swans were in the exact same place just a few weeks earlier as I made my way through with BeaV and another paddler.

We also had trouble in/around the English Portage with not enough water. The portage is not maintained anymore.

3 hours on the Grand Portage? That is moving right along!!! I believe we did it in 4:30-- even having some gear moved down the night before.

What a great trip with lots of good mileage days, I'm glad that you posted a report here!
I've always wondered if Grassy Portage was used or maintained and assumed that it at least would be kept open by snowmobilers. Good to here that it's not being let go.
Thanks for the informative report!

nice, thanks for posting it.

could you post your food list?

Excellent trip - inspiring! Had to get out the maps and look all the distances up. Well done!

My son is home now from his second AmeriCorp experience, he spent a year with the Texas Conservation Corp, and I shared this report with him. I've been thinking about the car logistics and came up with a plan. I can start at one end and my son can start in the opposit end and we can exchange car keys as we pass each other, perhaps a simultaneous key toss in the middle of Basswood! He said he would rather start at Grand Portage and get the long portage out of the way, I am the opposite. Anyway, it's been fun to speculate where we might meet for the key exchange. Trips like this get my imagination going.

I'm late to the commenting by a few years, but I really enjoyed your trip report, photos, and packing list. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Rafterman 10/16/2015 05:11AM
Looks like a challenging and rewarding trip! I am interested in seeing your gear and provision list. Aldridge1958@gmail.com. Thanks for posting this report.

I've thought of doing the trip from west to east myself, thanks for the report. Impressed with your ability to trim your gear to that weight on a fall trip!

BTW, are you on String Lake in your profile pic? Sure looks familiar?
airmorse 10/16/2015 09:30AM
Nice report. Something I'd like to do some day.
wrestlencanoe 10/16/2015 04:08PM

Very nice! A trip like this is on my bucket list.
Kiporby 10/16/2015 04:35PM
Nice Work. That's alot of paddling in 10 days!
crumpman 10/16/2015 10:25PM
Nice trip and report. Makes me want to do the same.

Thanks for the report, you were moving pretty good. I recognize the Curtain Falls photo, we were there earlier this year.

Also, I couldn't have done that long of a trip without fishing...at least once or twice. (but that would have made that much more gear to haul)
callofthewild 10/16/2015 01:33PM
All I can say is wow!!!!! I am impressed. Thank you for sharing this adventure. Happy Paddling.
boonie 10/17/2015 08:18AM
Thanks, I enjoyed your report. I'd be interested in the food, gear list too.
Sjlubner 10/17/2015 11:05AM
Thank you all for the positive feedback.

My canoe used on the trip is my Wenonah Voyager.

Yes, Grassy Portage was cleared and wide, but very very wet and muddy.

Here is my packing list; gear and food.

lots of the same comments.

Impressive that it only took you 10 days. I would be done after day one.

Impressive that you can get that light, I might have carried double that.

I would need to take along some fishing equipment.

Quite impressive overall

Awesome trip report!

I was first introduced to this area as a whole on a Houseboat trip in 2013 with my parents/siblings/husband/nieces nephews and kids. We had 13 people on the house boat and traveled from Crane up to Kettle Falls.

I have fond memories of the area (including the area near the Grassy Cliffs where we went tubing) and it is what drew me back again and again making the BWCA the holiest of holy's in my book ;-)
ArrowheadPaddler 12/06/2015 07:30AM
Nice report. Impressive travel times!

Awesome trip.

Loved this report. I've never been to BWCA, but I have contacts in International Falls, so that makes it easier for me to plan a trip there. I was thinking to leave from IFalls and enter BWCA through EP12. I was so relieved to find someone else had done this route, so I know its not a crazy idea (having never been there). I plan to follow the border much like you did to Basswood, then drop down through Jackfish and Pipestone and exit at EP24. Did you have any issue getting to the EP on the right day for your permit? Or perhaps its no big deal since you went in the fall/low usage season? Not planning on 25 miles a day, I love canoe camping, but cling stubbornly to my creature comforts, no way I could do it with as little weight as you! I don't see any scotch or summer sausage on your list ;-)
