Thanks for sharing. Interesting story about the wolf - curious behavior. I've heard a pack howling at night in that area in the past.

That's generally a popular route and since I've been going up there for a long time, I've started to see more people during the fall. My first trip in early Sept almost 20 years ago was in the area you were and we didn't see anyone until Nina Moose Lake (we entered at LIS north). We've moved our trips to later in Sept and have had better luck having more solitude. That said, the weather can be variable. We've had sleet/cold or 70's and sunny.

I just did a 7 day solo out of Sawbill, north towards the Louse River area and saw 6 people the entire time. All campsites were open and I didn't see those people for a span of 3 days. That said, I took a 460 rod portage the first day into my trip and those can deter people from tripping to that area.

Best wishes on your next fall adventure!

Thanks for sharing that - odd behavior indeed. I'll echo paddlefamily somewhat - long portages and a second day of travel will thin the herd considerably.

I love hearing wolves. I was once camped on an island between two packs howling from each shore, with pups yipping too.
