Glad you missed the actual storm and had a good trip. My last trip was the first thunderstorm I've sat through, although I've had some very windy conditions and some serious downpours. The lightning was a little unnerving. I've learned not to put too much stock in campsite ratings, but I'm not a base camper, so it's not as important.

Nice report!

Thanks for taking the time to share your photos and story. Sounds like it was an enjoyable adventure. I agree with your assessment of the Little Caribou campsite. It is a nice site but, not necessarily in the upper echelon. I think it's location (being smack dab in the middle of such an overall awesome area of the BWCA) and the fact it is a single campsite lake; has more to do with its high desirability than the actual attributes of the site itself.

BTW
Did you check out the colossal cedar tree when you were at Johnson Falls?

No, I guess we missed that tree...was busy bushwacking through deadfall I suppose...

Thanks for the kind words...and I have to repay the compliment. I'm amazed at all the trip reports and site/portage reviews you log, and I hope you know how valuable they are to people like me trying to plan their next trip. The reports really help give a sense of what a given area has to offer, and the places to go/see. For a guy like myself who at this point in my life only really gets to spend 3 nights a year up there, I like to choose where I'm going in and what lakes I'm heading to wisely...and knowing as much as I can about portages, sites and lakes really helps. I tip my hat to you and others who share all that you do.

We were camped on Caribou about 1 1/2 months later than your trip and went through Little Caribou (campsite was open) on our way to Johnson Falls. The water in Little Caribou was murky and greenish looking. Did it look like that when you were there?

By the time we went there the trail to Johnson Falls was pretty passable again with only a couple of big deadfalls to climb over. The falls then were great for swimming!

I remember one morning a bunch of debris and bugs and stale water seemed to have collected on the lake...I think it was following a super calm night. But the wind soon pushed everything away and the rest of the time there the water seemed ok. It's a shallow lake, so I'm sure more prone to murkiness (you can see how different it looks from surrounding lakes on google satellite), but we certainly swam in it quite a bit and didn't have any issues outside of the one morning.

I agree, I have read and re-read many of TB trips reports as well. There are so many users on this site that have lead to new ideas for our trips!
