Thanks, enjoyed your report. It sounds like a successful first solo. I'd love to see some of the pics if you ever get any put up. I haven't been to that area, but it always seemed like it would make a nice entry for a short solo.

Thanks for sharing your report. Lots of good info. I tend to over pack as well; this fall will be my true test. I have been planning & weighing, weighing and planning for 6 months to cut back. Once I got down to the absolute bare essentials I chose a new route that cut my portages from 8 the first day, down to 3, then added back in some luxury items like a chair, reflector oven and array of ingredients to cook in the oven.

My pack weighed 50 lbs. My food bag/cook kit was about 15 more. I use the padded canoe seat with a back that came with the canoe in camp if I want to sit on a chair. I have found that I only use about 6 baits fishing. Next time I'll only bring a spool of extra line, a couple leaders, a couple jigs, a couple topwaters, a couple deep crankbaits, pair of hemastats. My cook kit is a cheap butane one burner, a Stanley stainless upright cooker with the two plastic cups inside, and one light 9 inch skillet. I brought two butane bottles and used 2/3s of one bottle in about 3 days of cooking. I like the Stanley for making soups. One knife fork and spoon, a small metal spatula, can opener, and some paper plates. I bring olive oil, pancake syrup in small 2 ounce squeeze bottles, and bring a little solid crisco, about 4 spoonfuls of butter in small snap lid containers, a couple peanut butter packs and jelly packs borrowed from the Hy Vee food court. Small canned chicken and a small pack of ham. I make 2 meals per day. On this trip I made chicken, cheese, onion, and pepper quesadillas, wild rice soup and fried fish in wild rice soup, and PBJ on mini bagels. Breakfasts were toasted mini bagels with jelly or pancakes with minced ham in them. I bring 6 of those mini pineapple juice cans. Those are the best despite the weight. I always plan meals for one day less than I'm going to stay. That forces me to catch and keep at least one fish at the last afternoon for dinner. I also have to rethink my clothes. One time I almost froze to death in the BW in July. This time I found that I wore pretty much one pair of ultralight rain pants and a couple qwik dry shirts the whole trip. No need for the T shirts, extra shorts, extra fleece jacket, poncho, extra hat. I may splurge on a bug shirt with hood like the one I saw my fellow traveler wearing. I bought a pair of close toed Crocs and wore those on portages with socks (they are slippery inside without the socks)- I loved em.
