I tried to post my trip report as a link to a YouTube slide show. Looks like it the link didn't work well in the trip report but here it is: Seagull Entry May 2018

Thanks! Getting up for the sunrise (and pre-sunrise color) at about 4:45 is painful for Spring and Summer trips... fall trips not so bad. Sometimes, I will go right back to bed if nothing catches my eye... but I am usually glad I got up early.

That was really beautiful, Gary - the next best thing to "being there". They get better every time; I've watched them all multiple times and it's interesting to note the progression in quality. I watched in 4K and those 1st two sunrises were breathtaking. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for watching and commenting!
Flynn - We plan to do a 12-day spring trip going in a Kawishiwi Lake and go north through Polly, Malberg, Adams, Boulder, then Little Sag and back on Kawishiwi River, through Malberg and Polly. August trip with grandkids entering at Sawbill and staying in that area. Hopefully also a Fall trip, but no plans make yet.

Gary,

Your video is beautiful. Would it be alright for me to play the video to a group at a boundary waters meet up?

Thanks!

Gary-
A couple of notes on your spring trip. I haven't done that exact trip, but have been on all of it except Ledge to Makwa if that's the way you are going.

You will have a short, very steep climb going north out of Boulder on the portage to intersect the Cap-Ledge portage. I came from Cap to Boulder in 2016 (see trip report). In 2014 Steve and I went NE from Malberg to Little Sag on the way around to Sawbill. One of the portages between Malberg and Makwa was partially flooded, requiring a short bushwhack (see 2014 trip report). Not sure of status now.

Adams may be worth an extra day for you. Same for Little Sag, but I think maybe you've been there before . . . ? I seem to remember pictures of the Little Sag-Mora portage. There should be a lot of flowers on the way to Polly.

It should be an enjoyable trip.

Once again, just beautiful. Did you happen to see what those vultures were so interested in? Love the grouse and toad shots especially.

Great photos Gary! I'm heading up for the first time this month. What kind of camera did you use?

Boonie - Thanks for the info... will check out your report! As it stands, we plan to spent an extra night on Malberg, Adams/ Boulder, Little Sag. We have been to Little Sag a couple times, but neither time made it to the areas in the West and Northwest part of the lake... so hopefully this time. I have been through the Little Sag - Mora portage... one of my favorites in the Boundary Waters.

Thanks Jaywalker! We had cleaned fish once on the far west end of our island so the vultures may have found some remnants ... other than that, I didn't notice any sign of them nesting.

EKD75: "Great photos Gary! I'm heading up for the first time this month. What kind of camera did you use?"
Thanks EKD75! My main camera is a Canon 5D Mark IV... and a little Canon G9X point and shoot camera that is always with me.
This may be more than you want to know Boundary Waters Photography
Have a great trip!

Thanks Gary, great information! So as a rookie photographer the G9X point and shoot would be a good one for me!

You might do a search on this site for 'which camera' ...you will get lots of ideas. I see Panasonic Lumix waterproof appear a lot. The G9x is a good choice for me, since it has a larger sensor, shoots RAW format and is quite small... but it is not waterproof. That can be a problem for some. I keep my G9X in a zip lock bag along with a lens cloth, since I tend to pull it out during bad weather.
