Lake One entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Kawishiwi Ranger Station near the city of Ely, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 21 miles. Access is a canoe landing at Lake One.

Sounds like a great trip. Been on most of this route but never at one time. Must have been interesting to keep going from fairy secluded spots to very busy areas!

It was! I thought we would see more people, but really most of the trip was spent with little human contact. Thinking about a similar route that I could do solo next year, since my son will have a new job by then and won't be able to get that much time off. Any ideas?

Very fun read and photos. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a great trip. As I followed along I kept wondering when you were going to turn back toward S Kawishiwi! Did you drop a car at Sawbill or have them shuttle you? Also, were the Raybans still servicable? I’m guessing the cigar was past it’s usefulness .

In addition to the Frost river trip options in your trip planning thread, another area would be Little Indian Sioux North entry up to little loon and follow the small lakes just south of Lac La Croy over to Ge-be-on-e-quet, to Oyster and back east to Pauness lakes and back to the entry. At least one longer portage on this route but I it is towards the end when your food would be down. Not sure if this is long enough for 2weeks but would give you lots of time to look around.

We left my truck at Sawbill and drove his car to the entry...


The raybans...yes, although the polarization is starting to peel. The cigar...LOL yes, past it's usefulness!

Nice report! I was also going to ask about the vehicles but you answered that.


When we were there a few years back in June, that portage on the NW side of Malberg was much higher water. Still muddy, but nothing like what's in your picture. However, the pond in the middle of the portage was also much bigger
