Sounds like you were really pushing the envelope regarding ice up. That had to be, at least somewhat, nerve racking? I know the Wench portage can be a little cluttered at times. You didn't say too much about those portages north of Brule - how were they in the snow? Kicking around the idea of heading that way next spring.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story & photos.

Loved your report, but I was thankful to be reading in my warm chair and NOT experiencing it! :-) These lakes are probably my favorite area from our long BWCA trip in 1992, and seeing them in the snow was so different! Not for me, but glad that hardy folks like you enjoy it.

Thanks for your report and the beautiful photos!

That was a great trip! I too love watching fall turn to winter and I always go this time of year for just that. I think if you would have gone a few days later you would have been in trouble so your timing was great.

I cancelled my trip for last weekend because I was a few days too late and the ice is getting too thick. Blasted!

Another board member inquired about ice and Kevlar. Guess your trip answered that question. The mink had to be a real adrenaline trip. And the wondering what are you doing here also likely reasonable. Glad you had fun.

What a trip, reminds of some of my trips back in the 1970-80"s when I was much younger and adventure seeking. You will remember these trips.

I like it! Stuff like this makes you constantly think and make changes. Ice is Nice? was a good title.

This needs to be made a sticky in the Trip Planning forum, especially in light of the SAR call-outs that had to be made last month. Thanks for posting this reality check for those who might confuse October with September.
