I have heard other people talk about making meals in zip lock bags, sounds like a great idea but just a warning: http://tinyurl.com/yh4rob

I never even thought about the plastic bag, something to think about.
I kinda cheated on the freezer bag meals. Since I had the boiling water in the pot, I just whipped everything in the pot. The Apple pudding one is the only one I actually did in the bag. It was late and I didn't want to wash anything.

I do have more pics in the members photo gallery. The panoramic pics turned out really cool.

Glad the three of you enjoyed your first solo. Loved the Wilson picture.

Love your sense of humor! ;-) I'm sorry you missed your tripping partner, but glad you didn't let that stop you. (I think 5 days would be more than enough for me, too...)

As for the plastic bags...there probably is a risk of some chemical leeching, but keep in mind that freezer bag cooking is NOT boiling things in the bags. Boiling water is added, but it is not sitting in boiling water. I normally try to be careful about unnecessary chemical exposure as I am very sensitive (for example, I don't cook on plastic at home, ever, and I make all of my own cleaning products), but I am going to be doing FBC in the BW. I figure it's 5 days of my life, some of them use cold water, and the heat of the boiling water is only there a very short time; not like putting it in a pot to cook inside the bag.

I don't really like using all the plastic, either, as I try to be kind to mother earth, but for this, convenience is winning.

That's an entertaining report, and sounds like a successful trip. As a first solo, four nights out seems pretty good. Your meals like couscous with jerky and cheese on the side looked pretty creative and a lot better than the freeze dried crap we eat for dinner yet easy to make. Thanks for posting!

I think the trip was a success. That couscous thing I found at an Amish store, they had quite a few different things that you just add water to.

I loved your tr. The food pics were great-- for my recent trip, my food was pretty mundane so your creativity is inspiring.

I want to do a solo trip too some day, maybe October. thinking of just going in for one night for my first one. I have done a lot of solo camping, but it has been a long time since I did anything that took me so far from civilization, though it sounds like your trip was kind of crowded for your taste.

Too bad about the ex.

Cheers, Karen

Thanks Karen!
I didn't see a lot of people from my camp. It was after a day or so that I was looking at the map and looked at how many campsites were around, and that's when I thought about so many people around. I have gone in on #37 $ #39, I really liked that area, I think that is where I would try a solo again. October wouldn't be bad anywhere.

As far as the ex, I have been burnt, and like a forest fire, better things grow from the ash. A new beginning.
But, I do really miss her.

btw-- where did you get those foot gloves? and the hammock with the tarp over it looks like the cat's meow. I showed the pics to my daughter and she agrees they are a must for our next trip. K

The hammock is from Gander Mountain, an Eagles Nest Outfitters double nest. VERY comfy. vibramfivefingers.com for the footware, but I bought them at canoecopia in Madison 2 years ago. I didn't see them there this year. They are great, nice rubber sole, and packs well, really nice for around camp. Once you get use to them, its like walking around in bare feet.

Great report. Except I get confused reading all these trip reports. I start thinking that I have done these trips.

Great report. My 4 buddies were the ones who passed you with the sails. I was in the third canoe without. There was a lot of mixed reaction to those, but it kept some less experienced guys busy. Thank you for the picture of the rock too, I was able to show my children what we were jumping from.

Nice report. That WAS a long day trip to do. I stayed on williamson Island for two nights (11th and 12th) and jumped off the Rock on the morning of the 13th.

You did real good for your first solo. And I agree, basecamping is not the way to go on a solo.

I say guys with aluminum canoes and sails on northern Insula. They were doing pretty good and even tacking into the wind.

Can't beat the weather we had eh? Too bad the water wasn't a little warmer. Thanks for posting the report.

Sorry I didn't meet up with you TomT. On Mon that camp on williamson island was empty, it looked like a nice camp as long as the wind didn't come from the east, my camp was on the east also, I had no wind problems the whole time. The weather wasn't bad at all, just some gloomy drizzly stuff to deal with. The water was quite chilly when I decided to take a swim. Totally weird summer this year. With the fishing, I don't think the fish knew what time of year it was. Really hit and miss.

And to the sail guys.......ya kinda surprised me when I first seen you. Thought there was a sail boat out there. Took a couple of pics. You guys did a nice job moving around with them. Very impressive.

Hi Rich,

Just picking up on your trip report. Very nicely done. I know what you mean about missing your old paddling partner. That was a theme for a few of my solo trips in northern Wis. I've worked out the bugs to the point where my 10-day BW solo trip in Sept. '09 was a success. It was a mix of travel and layover days. Check it out here if you're interested.
Maybe a few of my experiences will have something to offer you.

Koda
