Great photos from a great area. Looked like the water levels were very low.

Nice report.

Thanks, Tom - brought back a lot of memories from my Mudro trip last fall. I headed east from Gun towards Moosecamp though. I hear Angleworm is a very pretty lake, so it's on my to do list.

Thanks, all. Yes the weather was great - it was great throughout April (can't complain about cold in April). It's also true that the water levels are definitely down. Precipitation has been very scarce so far this year.

Nice trip report Tom and as usual excellent pictures. If only I had such talent at picture taking.

Regarding single portaging, I can tell you from personal experience that single portaging is very difficult unless you have very light gear and count every ounce. It can be done but if you don't need to and you don't mind taking an extra trip to get your gear and take pictures then double portage.

If you are trying to cover a lot of distance fast then I would think about single portaging. For me, it has been a quest to see if I can do it. Now that I have done it I can tell you there are many ups and downs with single portaging.

Great trip report.

Thanks for the perspective on single vs double portaging, SevenofNine. Attempting single portaging will probably become a low priority for me, and would only be useful for trips where pure speed and flexibility is required (perhaps like a bushwhacking trip). I suppose just the process alone of getting to the point where you can single portage would also result in great benefits for trips when you don't.

Your report and photos were outstanding! I noticed a lot of animal jawbones on my recent May 9-14 trip. What did that big jaw and teeth you photographed belong to?

Good report, loved all the pix.

Always be the second one in the outhouse, it's going to smell anyway so you might as well have a warm seat.

Far from being any kind of expert, but I finally settled on a deer for the jawbone. A moose would have been bigger, and I think the teeth wouldn't have been quite as even sized.

As for the animal sound, I had originally wondered if it might be a bear cub, but others with more experience suggested it may well have been either a lynx or bobcat.

Thanks for the trip report - and for talking about it at Wilderness Way on Monday night. You clearly had a good time on the trip and the weather could not have been nicer.

See you soon!

That sounded too low pitched, rhythmic and cat-like, so I did a little searching myself and think I have it figured out. From the very start, my wife had suggested that it was a black bear cub from my description. I did find some Lynx audio that came close, but it was still too animal-like (or cat-like). The sound I heard really sounded more human, like a baby or child screaming.

Then I found some audio for the distress sound made by a fearful bear cub at the North American Bear Center's website. That was it! (Or by far the closest thing to it I've found.) At the link below, play the audio for the "High emotion distress sound made by a fearful cub" (third one from the bottom).
