The only two things that bummed me out about it was we had to leave early, and the thought of how much plastic those bears are going to end up consuming to get at our relatively minor amount of food. Otherwise it is a good story, and a good lesson learned.

Wow edgeways, that stinks, especially since you had to struggle against the wind to get there. The other sad thing is there is a now big mess somewhere near that site. Nothing you could have done about that either. Glad you and B are OK. Thanks for the exciting report.

Sounds like you did everything right---what are ya gonna do but make the best of it--I hope your time in Ely was good at least. Ya know odds are you will never have another Bear encounter again. Most likley the yahoos who left the camp a mess before you got there are the reason you had bears in camp in the first place. Too bad your trip was cut short.

Thanks for sharing the story.

The only other thing I can think of you trying, is bouncing a few rocks off her mellon. We had a brave little black bear that took a liking to us on a float trip up in Alaska. The campable gravel bars on our river were few and far between, so packing up and moving down wasn't really an option. It may have been the countless kings we had hanging out within casting distance of the site, too. Well, this bear just kept coming back, no matter how much yelling and banging we did. Finally, my buddy Ryan had had enough. She popped out of the thick stuff about 30 yds. down river, and he took off like a man posessed, chasing her and throwing numerous rocks at her. He plunked her good a few times, and we were black bearless the rest of the night. We ran into an outfitter with some clients a couple days further downstream, and he agreed with our/Ryan's technique. He also said in his twentysomething years of outfitting, he's never had a camp ruined by grizzlies, just the pesky little blackies. And yes, we had a couple guns with us, and the idea of having to whack this little bear never crossed our minds. Sorry, had to throw that in there.

A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer. Mitch Hedberg

I think the crack of gunfire the smell of powder is this case is a better choice, besides facing a mamma bear with a pot in your hand is a dangerous situation.

Another example of why I carry.

OMG "Corndogged again!" My all time favorite quote.
