Nice report. Enjoyed the pictures and bear story.

Wow, you really got to experience something a lot of people never will in their lifetime. This route is getting a pretty good bear reputation these days. Oh well, I hope you make it back soon.

I saw a bear on my first night in the BW and haven't seen one since. And that is about 12 trips ago.

Interesting trip report. I see that site #3 on Disappointment is ENE of the south island site (#2), which was raided by a sow and two cubs on Aug. 30. The two young guys there said their food bag was on the ground and their next day's lunch was in their tent. Of course, the bears responded appropriately to the open invitation. Somehow they didn't get all the food, since the guys told their story on the 31st while fishing near my campsite at #7, which is NNW of #3. Another close encounter of the bruin kind occurred there, which will be documented in further detail in an upcoming trip report.

Great report! I would recommend those wool socks inside Keens - it works great for me and helps keep rocks out during portaging, as well as keeping me feet warm on a chilly day when they get wet.

I think you made a good decision - I had a similar problem 3 summers ago on Ensign with a bluff charge and that was enough for me - I did a moonlight paddle to another campsite far away - no need to challenge those bears - it's their home, not ours.

Thanks...I still have a little something lurking in the back of my psyche on the decision to leave. It's nice to have reassurance!

Great report. No question in my mind that I would have given way and left the area. I've been on seven trips and haven't seen a bear yet, not sure how I'll react when it happens.

Nice report & pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I had the same problem with my first pair of Keens. I use NRS wet socks when I wear them in the water & wool socks for around camp.

I agree. Those eggs are absolutely tasteless! Over the years, occasionally someone will want to try them again. I always chop up an onion. Also, I sprinkle REAL bacon pieces And shred some cheese then season the "he!!" out of them. Still nowhere as good as the real thing, but at least they're edible.

Good call on the bears in camp site.

Good read. My son and I left through Disappointment Lake in 2007 and battled the worst wind we've ever paddled into. Thank goodness for the islands and a place to duck out of the wind every so often.

Good call on what would have been your last night's stay. It was too obvious by your description that Mrs. Bear thought that was her property.

I appreciate your candid reporting which included a mishap. Makes the report easier to relate to.
