Great report. Thanks for taking the time to share your story & photos.

Sounded like you hit it right? As traffic in that area wasn't overwhelming as it can sometimes be. Glad you got alot of adventure out of your trip. I think your photo= on Nina Moose lake captures what it's all about. Well done!

I worried going in about being backed up at portages and never really getting that nice BWCA feeling that you're all alone up there. I looked and saw that all permits were out for our entry date and the four previous dates, so my worries were justified.

But other than traffic on the Moose River on the way in and out we saw very few people for that popular a route at that popular time of year. I was shocked that Iron was empty as far as we could see.

I would say we hit it just right.

We entered the day before you and came out a couple of days after you. We did the same route but camped up by the pictographs on LLC. We could see the smoke from the fire from Friday until they put it out on Tuesday. You probably didn't notice the helicopters (or maybe you did) keeping an eye on the fire. Tuesday aftenoon, a couple of planes came down and doused the fire. The rain you got on the way out caught us while fishing (without raingear)and soaked us pretty good. When we came out on Thursday, the rain hit us on the last portage just like it hit your group. By then, we had stashed our raingear in our packs.

I was surprised at how few people we saw on both LLC and Agnes. I certainly wasn't expecting to have our pick of campsites.

Glad you had a good trip.

Thanks, Don. We definitely heard the choppers and saw the tank planes dumping water.

How'd fishing go for you guys?

Fishing was decent. More smallies than walleyes. The walleyes we did catch were decent size. One was just shy of 4 lbs. A couple of smallies were 3 1/2 to 4 lbs. We brought 2 lbs of leeches in leech lockers. All walleyes were caught on leeches. I had one of my better days on Saturday, catching 17 fish. It went down hill for me after that though. We had plenty of fish to eat and came back with a lot of food.

Pretty awesome trip. However, that river does take a lot out of you.

I agree. The paddle in and out is pretty long and we didn't like spending one of our precious few night on Agnes or Nina Moose.

I would say the only downer was spending so much of two days getting back to the EP. But the route itself was beautiful.

And now I start researching routes for the next trip! Same time of year but another part of the BWCA for new experiences.

17 fish on Saturday ... wow. No one in our group approached that, but we also had a lot of novices and probably didn't commit as thoroughly as your group. We were on the move a lot for the adventure side of things and we did not use live bait, which certainly would have improved our production.

Nice talking to ya.

Sounds like a great trip. We made the hike from EP16 to that same, wonderful site on Boulder Bay 3 weeks before you. We took one extra night and spent it at Curtain Falls on Iron. Bummer about the creek getting so low. We were close to that but didn't have to do any pushing.

Thanks for sharing.
