Entry Point 49 - Skipper & Portage Lakes

Skipper and Portage Lakes entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Gunflint Ranger Station near the city of Grand Marais, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 28 miles. Access is a 320-rod portage from Poplar Lake or a 230-rod portage from Iron Lake. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

Yes, to beat the wind you have to get going before 10:30. I've battled wind and waves plenty of times on Brule. Good trip... Nice report.

Good report. We have done all of this area ourselves and it brought back memories, especially the wind on Brule.


I think you meant to say that your second campsite was on Kiskadinna, not Winchell. But I followed along just fine. :-)


I can certainly identify with your sentiments--on my first trip I was already making plans for the next one, too. And it continued for 40 years. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the positive feedback and the good wishes. I fixed that error with the wrong lake and found a couple other mistakes to edit at the same time.


..the lakes are calling...I need to get back up there...

Great report, thanks. I have been out of Brule several times. The most memorable was when Brule was glass smooth at 1 in the afternoon!
