Thanks Guys,

The pressure for the campsites will probably change my mind. I envisioned day trippers fishing and an empty lake at night. I used to day trip there all the time back in the day, bummer what has happened.

Why go to a burned out area when there are many other options available to canoe and camp in a beautiful BW setting. That is the last place I would take a first timer. I would rethink that idea.

Ooops - double post.

There is still lots of traffic and pressure for the sites that are more "functional " since the fire. You will have people and competition for camp sites.

I was there two summers ago. A few sights had been rehabbed and some were still closed. The sights not affected by the fire were at a premium. Most people base camp on Isabella so it pays to get there early in the morning and maybe ask around to see if anyone is heading out. Walleye fishing has always been good but the walleye size has been historical small-most being around 12 inches. There are also some nice size northerns as well.

I was to Isabella about 4 years ago on a solo and got landlocked for 2 days.. We used to take our kids there back in the day of canoe rests, wooden throwns and log picnic tables. My kids learned to paddle a canoe there, how to jig for walleyes, and how to catch northerns on spinner baits. The fire really did some serious damage to the best campsites but there are still several sites still open with lots of shade. We always caught enough walleyes for a fish supper [used leeches] and really caught some nice northerns in the cabbage with spinnerbaits. The biggest northen I boated was a 40 incher [released] and one trip we found a dead northern along the bank that was 44 inches long. Never did well on smallies but talked to a couple of guys that had several in the 18 to 20 inch range. There's a spring along the south bank not to far from the portage that we always drank from, never filterd nor boiled the water and nobody got sick. There was some great northern fishing below the rapids where the lake dumps into the river. Hope this helps. FRED

I know this has been discussed a bunch in the past. Has anybody been there in the last year. I'm thinking about giving it a two night whirl. I'll have a very newbie with me , and I'm thinking this might be a good place to test out new gear and bolt if the company is miserable.

I'm figuring the fishing should be pretty good due to the lack of pressure, and at least some campsites have some shade?

This won't be my only trip this year.
