Thanks friends.........

I've started to use my cell phone for video more and more. IT shoots HD and is way better than my camera.

I'm seriously looking into a better camera, as I hate taking my cell......

I am starting my trip via Clay/GreenwoodCreek/Waiwig for the first time. Tripping from Clay thru Kawnipi/Russell/Sturgeon/MaligneRiver/Lac LaCroix. We are going in August and hoping for high water just to start the trip. The alternative landing on Ross lake due to low water levels has some long portages which we hope to avoid.

Very interested in hearing anything you have to say about the Greenwood Creek and the Waiwiag.

No obstructions on the Waiwiag? Did the log jams clear or was high water helpful?

I am intrigued by the long and winding voyage the Greenwood/Waiwiag/Kawnipi entry has to offer. How long did it take you to make it to Kawnipi?

Looking fwd to your trip report.

There are 2 or 3 low areas in the Greenwood, but we had plenty of flow to get over without too much struggle. In august those will definitely be unload areas, but not a full unload/portage.

The Wawiag was free of all log jams. There were no jams, and no areas where we were concerned. A couple strainers that were well identified. Besides that........NOTHING.

It took us about 8 hours on the river and creek to Kawa Bay.

If you're on FB, you can check out my pics there. I will update my GeoFisher page soon........

Here is a Youtube vid I put together.

Wow, GEO - looks like you had one heck of a trip! You must be already itching to go back :-)
GeoFisher 06/04/2017 12:29PM
Man oh Man, what a trip...............WHAT A TRIP.

Flying into Clay had a lot of logistics, and a whole lot of worry, but the Greenwood Creek was flowing and the Wawiag river had no obstructions.

We camped the first night on Clay Lake using Crown permits, on the NorthWest campsite.

Fishing was fantastic, with many firsts, and a whole lot of solid fish.

Multiple 100 fish days........one day with 60 over 3lbs, weighed. Not many giants, but the group did end up with 8 over 4. I personally caught 4 over 4.

Best Walleye fishing I've ever experienced. Swimbaits simply destroy them. SLOW DOWN, feel the tap and then when they inhale the bait......WOW.

Took 2 growlers of local beer for the 24 oz steaks we had day 2.

10 lbs of spaghetti and meatballs (first night, in the park, with no portages)......courtesy of the Queen of Keewatin, was well worth the headache of getting into the park and figuring out how to heat it.

Getting back to using soft jerkbaits, sure is fun. We had a day where I used every soft plastic jerkbait I took...........WOW.

I used every type of bait I took. I just took too many of some and too few of others.

I will be posting a complete report soon......

Later,

One Week................Man, I'm dying here..............

I've not looked forward to a trip this much in a long, long, LONG time.

Fishing locally has been pretty good though, with over a dozen over 5 a couple over 6 and 30-40 over 4. kentucky and Barkley lakes have been on FIRE, but I cannot wait for Kawnipi.

Good luck on your trip, I bet its gonna be a really good time and a bit of an adventure to boot!! "

I only live a few blocks from that BPS.............I HATE it :) .

If you really want to step up your game, maybe you and I need to spend a couple days on Kentucky Lake. Early October, depending on where we are in the fall transition could be CRAZY.....

too early for the fly.......the fly is a late november/ december method.

So, you're going to the art fair..........Yea, we should DEFINITELY try to get together, maybe hit world beers or sergio's world beers, or something. DEFINITELY.
mastertangler 04/26/2017 05:18AM
Geo
what sorts of issues do you have going on with your shoulders and back? What precautions are you taking to insure you don't go down?

For your shoulders I would be sure to warm up my rotator cuff before paddling by doing arm circles.......20 small one way, 20 small the other way and then make them big. Very important that is warmed up.

Lower back? Tight hamstrings can really cause lower back issues. I have been using a LaCrosse ball under my hammies and getting a deep tissue massage without paying a bunch of money. Works pretty good.........Put the ball under your leg while sitting (driving or watching TV) and move your leg slightly.......keep moving it around until you get unbound. Works pretty good.

I also bring a few of those icy hot heat patches.......and on one trip I started having a bit of a back issue and heated some water and put it on my sleeping pad and laid on it. Can you say "owee"? Worked though!

"

Back in 2011 three of us flew into Clay Lake, paddled down the Wawiag to Kawa Bay, through Kawnipi to Murdock, the length of Agnes (luckily it was a calm day), Sunday Lake, Bayley Bay to Prairie Portage, and finished at the Public landing on Moose Lake.

I got to playing with Google Earth this evening and the route we took totaled about 61 miles, and there's not a heck of a lot of portaging.

I then mapped it out going through the Falls Chain and found that route is about 53 miles.

I was expecting the Falls Chain route to be much shorter. I guess I've never looked at the routes at the same time on a large map.

GeoFisher: You guys are going to have a great time. Enjoy!

Wally13 04/23/2017 04:46PM
Geo,

I have done 4 fly-ins with my brothers to Kawnipi via Clay. Did 2 fly-ins in the 80's and 2 in early 90's. Overnighted at Canadian Border Outfitters each time and flew out of Moose in a big yellow Otter from Lac La Croix Air Service. Each time we had the same pilot who flew for over 40 years. He was awesome and we felt quite at ease because of his many years of experience.

All 4 times we departed right off the pontoon into our canoes. You are only able to strap canoes on one side of the plane and if you have a group of 4, Ontario regulations mandate that you "nest" a smaller canoe inside a larger canoe when carrying 2 canoes. Not sure if that is the rule now but it was back in the early 90's.

You start off entering the most windiest narrow creek called the Greenwood River. It is very shallow and one time I had to drag my canoe a few miles when it was so shallow. Sometimes Quetico officials will fly paddlers into Mack when the Greenwood is very low and impassable.

There used to be 4 portages before you got to Kawa Bay from the Waiwag but I have heard rumors that there may be only 2 portages as the large beaver dams have been dismantled from river flows. Let us know what you find. It is a great paddle. I usually make it to large island campsite on Kawa Bay but I have made it to McKenzie Bay but that can be a long day for sure.

Good fishing in the Waiwag and all thru Kawa Bay and Kawnipi.

Have fun.

the Gear is out and getting checked over........

Here down in Louisville area, we have a gigantic party called Thunder over Louisville, and my wife threatened me within an inch of my life if I got my "crap" out before Thunder weekend.........

Well, Thunder was yesterday, 4/22, and I was up bright and early today to get my gear out and ready.

I've tested stoves,
I've tested filters.
I've checked my sleeping pad for leaks
I've fluffed my down sleeping bag
I've pulled down the packs.
I've checked the food packs
I've checked my cooking gear.

Man, I'm PUMPED...........

I made my shopping list, and I'm buying all the dry goods tomorrow with SmallieSaver and GadgetMan.

Did I say I'm pumped :) .

WE are coming out the Falls Chain....PP is about a full day longer coming out of Kawnipi. We have been able to push and get from mid Kawnipi to Cache Bay in a Day. That is a LONG, HARD day, but definitely doable.

We're going to take more fresh food this trip too.......like I said, I cannot wait.

I'm excited to hear about the trip! That one's on our bucket list as well, except I'd like to spend a night or two on Mack to see what the fishing is like before heading on to Kawnipi.

Sounds like a ball - enjoy and be safe!

I have a trip out of the East end coming up. IT has been a trip we've been planning for 20 years.

Finally, the 4 horsemen + 2 are flying into Clay, headed to Kawnipi. 4 of us, Geo, Gadget, SmallieSaver and Chms have been planning this for years.

Bulin, my partner had also talked about this trip for quite a few years too.

Man, I cannot WAIT. Lots of fishing, lots of paddling, and MORE fishing.. I'm hoping the river is not too bad, and I'm really hoping there are not too many obstructions, as we want to make it to Kawnipi on day one.

This trip has some creative planning too, as we're planning on camping on Clay, which has some interesting requirements, including Crown Land permits.

IT is all good though.....I'm really, really looking forward to this trip.

I will definitely be documenting this trip...............
