quote billconner: "Sort of related, Ely US Customs and Border Protection office closes for the season in early September. My answer is stop in Duluth but I suspect some or more just don't check in. "
I checked in at Customs in Ely yesterday and noted that the last day they are open this season is September 9 (8:30-4:30 until then). After that, in addition to stopping in Duluth as billconner suggests, or blowing it off, as many people do, is to get an I-68 Form, which allows you to call into Customs to report your arrival in the US from Canada by small boat. Unlike an RABC, you have to apply in person. The link below provides information about it, but I know you can apply in more locations than indicated. I got one in I Falls a couple years ago, and I believe you can get them in Ely too before they close for the season. It would be nice if you could get them by mail, since they don't really ask you anything that can't be filled out in a form like the RABC application, but our CBP bureaucracy apparently can't handle that.

They will have a ton of envelopes to fill out and a metal box with a slit to put in your money and envelope. Just keep the part with your number of permit etc. as it says.
Nice time of year.

I've been through Prairie Portage after the ranger station was closed, but it has been a few years.

I'm sure they still have a Self-Permitting kiosk/drop box at PP. Before the new store was erected, it was in the small shelter just to the right of the portage over from Sucker Lake. I think its more likely that it is now on the front porch of the store.

Just fill out the multi-part form and place the park's copy of the form along with payment for camping in the drop box (steel with lock). I've done payment by credit card here (and at other locations), by supplying cc number, expiration date and ccv number. Cash and (I believe) checks are also acceptable.

I will also usually supply a printed list of my anticipated route, # in party, canoe color(s), tent and tarp color(s) to assist in locating me in an emergency. (I think that some of this may now be on the form itself, as I remember covering all of this with the ranger when I entered PP this year ... but it might just be information they file in the office along with the permit.)

Jackfish, thank you for posting that number.

I called them and this is what I found out.

Prairie Portage will be closing on September 17th, 2017 for the season.
For anyone entering after that time, there isn't a need for any online reservation.
There is a kiosk located at the station for self issue permits. So, fill one out and leave payment.

For the offseason, the permit fee will be $16.95 CANADIAN. Make sure you have the accurate conversion rates for that day.

Also, a RABC permit needs to be in hand before entering the park. That also include fishing licenses if you are planning on fishing.

Call Quetico Provincial Park headquarters in Atikokan. (807) 597-2735

Please report back here what they say.

Hi everyone.

I am planning to go into Quetico in September, but I don't have specific dates yet. More then likely it will be after Prairie Portage has shut down for the season, so September 15 or later.

What is the process of getting a permit at that time? In the past I have reserved my permit online and then picked it up at the Ranger Station. Do I still do an online reservation? Or do I just arrive at Prairie Portage and fill something out? How does the billing work?

For someone who has does this before, could you please explain for a September Quetico newbee?

P.S. I already have my RABC permit.

Thank you.
