A good initial loop into the area is to go to Bottle portage, stop at Rebecca falls, Curtain falls, Roland chain, Argo, Darky, Darky river, Minn, McAree, with pickup at Black Robe portage. No difficult portages, great fishing for waldos, lakers, and smallies."
That is exactly the route I took on my first trip to Q in 2013. Absolutely beautiful loop. We used Anderson's for the tow as well. I highly recommend.

quote amhacker22: "The additional drive to get to the actual entry point on some of the northern Q entries is only a couple/few hours. I've entered at Batch & Beaverhouse and both were simple to get to. One time we went straight through from Mpls, another we layed over in Int'l Falls. In both cases we were able to be on the water by 9:00ish.

Something to consider."

The per person per day camping fees are also cheaper for northern entries.

You will also not need an RABC permit with a northern entry (or a Crane Lake entry with a tow ... they hit Canadian Customs at Sandy Point before dropping you off at the various EPs). You'll need a passport either way since you'll be re-entering the US from Canada.

Beyond Batch and Beaverhouse, there are other northern entries. Another frequently used EP is French Lake/Pickerel Lake which is at the extreme eastern end of the northern part of the park. This could be of interest if you are planning on heading up through the Gunflint area into Canada. Dawson Campground is also located at French Lake (the put-in location before you reach Pickerel) if you need a campground. Stanton Bay (of Pickerel) and Lerome Lake are also northern EP's, but the logistics are a bit more complicated for these.

Early June is a good time to go. Lakers are typically more shallow and smallies might still be on their beds. Walleye fishing has been so-so in that window for me of recent and pike always seem to be active. (Remember ... no live bait and barbless or crimped barbs.)

I meant 7 days . And the tow in and out sounds like good advice. Do you have an idea what the tow costs.

The fishing could be anywhere in June, 2018. If you're going to take the tow, you should consider Quetico. The most efficient logistics would be a round trip tow and spend your paddling time in Q.

I'd go for more, but 6 days is better than nothing. There's a lot of water in that part of the park (I guess that's true everywhere...), and the fishing then should be dynamite, so I'd try to squeak in a few more days.

Where specifically you thinking of heading?

I forgot to mention we are looking at first week in June 2018.

Ok. 6 trips to bwca. Now planning first trip north of the border. We are thinking Crane Lake with a boat ride and paddle back to US. Out at Nina Moose 16. Is 6 days 7 nights ample to spend some time fishing? All help is appreciated.
