Initially I hated the idea of barbless when they first changed the regs. However, over the years I've come to respect it. I'd say we lose a handful of fish each trip that we would have landed with barbed hooks. Because the fishing is so good in the Q, those few lost usually aren't a big deal. When catching and releasing, it definitely makes it easier to get the hooks out and the fish back in the water quickly. It also helps avoid the issue of a barbed hook deeply embedded into one of us. That said, when I'm fishing in Michigan or anywhere else, I still use barbed hooks.

I still struggle with the live bait ban though. Minnows- I get that, we don't want exotic species introduced. But there was nothing better than sitting around the campfire in the evening while catching numerous walleye on leeches/bobbers. I've tried that with Berkley Gulp leeches, and it just isn't the same as a live leech.

I know it is nice not to have a barb when the hook goes through your finger, but I am willing to take that chance. Understand the risks and be careful while landing a fish that is hooked with a barb."

Both have advantages and disadvantages but prefer barbs myself...except when in the Q of course.

The only barbless hooks required are the ones tied to your fishing line. All others can be left barbed until needed.

After a couple of quetico trips, I now have a box of pinched barb hooks in multiple sizes that I can just switch out when I'm there.

Correct

Quetico requires barbless hooks. So can you have barbed lures in the tackle box for use later on in the trip back on the good old USA side?
