I'll just add that pine is an awesome lake!

There was a trip report a few years back about a guy who Dumped his canoe and gear in early spring...check that out if you haven't. Lots of good detail there if I remember.

I had my best fishing not on pine, but on McFarland where the stream spills in from pine. There's a sharp drop off on the McFarland side -like an underwater waterfall where the fish would hang. That was in mid July as well.

One regret was I wish I had gone up to gadwal- as it's supposedly good for small trout.

Be ready for some wind as pine is one giant wind tunnel.

Carmike,I have wondered about stump and fault. Do you know if there are sunnies in fault? Marc

You can climb the hill up to Stumpf to have some fun on some dumb pike. Or check out the BRT as someone else has mentioned...There are some nice views.

We have been to pine a few times and have caught zero lakers! Frustrating ,but it is beautiful. We have found that Clearwater, mountain, and west pike all have decent lake trout populations. Some sites even good for shore fishing in the spring. Good luck! Marc

For adventure, take the canoe and fish poles up the hill(s) into Gadwall or Vale and try for brookies. Tough to find the trails, they are quite a hill climb but the path isnt too bad. Only site on Pine that I've stayed at was the lone south site. It is a decent site. I think there's a couple better ones on the north side. You can paddle all the way into the far west tip of Pine to hit the trail to Johnson Falls. It's a fair hike up to the Falls and the trail splits near the end.....one goes to the first set, the other goes to the upper falls.....make sure you see both.

I’m not sure if there are Lakers in Pine. Fish the northeast side for Walleye, bass by the northeast side also but toward the falls area. No pictographs on Pine.

The Boarder Route Trail (BRT) has some very nice overlooks that are worth the effort.

Haven't spent a lot of time on Pine specifically but I have been through the area a fair amount. I have had good luck fishing on Caribou. You might find fishing challenging in July, especially if it's warm. If on Pine, or any of those large east/west running lakes, be mindful of the wind! Johnson falls is definitely worth the trek. Have fun.

Hi Everyone,

I’m heading to the Pine Lake area next July with a hockey buddy of mine whom I’ve never tripped with before (he’s done just as many trips as I have and is BWCA proficient). We decided to go somewhere neither of us have been and Pine Lake won out. We’d like to fish and see Johnson Falls, but over than that, I don’t know what else is a must see/do in the area. We’ll be doing a 4 day trip, mid July, we’ll be looking for all fish species including lakers. Pictos would be an added bonus but I don’t think there’s any over there. Any advice, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks- Tony
