Shlush is your enemy. It’s tough to plan for. Because of that I like trails, but a trail that is a difficult hike in the summer can be impossible in winter. Also it’s tough to plan until you know the snow conditions. My last winter trip we had over two feet of powder snow, it almost killed me. A route I’ve liked is enter a Hegman and up to angleworm and the lakes north and east of there. Nice country with some big trees.

After talking with the folks at Piragis yesterday I will likely do a loop or out and back north of Ely sticking to likes and portages. Avoiding rivers and moving water at inlets/outlets.
20+ years winter camping experience including sing up into Yosemite from Lee Vining and Mt Washington, NH in January. That said, I usually learn something useful every trip.
Solo trip- taking my backcountry xc skis /skins, Northern Lights snowshoes, & light sled. I'll figure out if I can use the skis when I get there.
Absolute max 10 miles distance per day. 3-4 days .
Just looking for a quiet walk in the Northwoods.
Any route suggestions or heads up about something I'm not getting?

SommelierPirate: "I'm also looking for a 3 or four day winter route for mid-January. The North Country Trail looks interesting for an out-n-back. Skiing would be great if there's enough white stuff. Also wondering if there is a winter route from Ely or Big Lake area to Curtain Falls. Pretty light traveling. A -40 bag, a bivvy sack, and a pad. Probably a light sled as, well if I'll be in lakes and rivers rather than hilly trails. Not too worried about making lots of distance each day, I like to pick a spot well before dark so I can leave the gear and go for a nice walk/ski and see a bit more before I settle in for the night. Any winter campers have some suggestions?
Thanks, Wally"

North Country Trail north of Remer has like 5-8 inches of snow. Myself I would do the BWCA.

North country trail is pretty nice. Ive done the parts by itasca. We have enough snow for skiing, i think this would be really fun except having to carry a warmer pair of boots. curtain falls looks cool, i dont think ive ever been to that side of crooked and skiing on lac la croix would be really fun as long as theres not a really strong wind. but you can layer up for that. i will also suggest an out and back on the superior hiking trail. this could be highly rewarding with great views and lots of waterfalls.

Hello,
I am beginning to plan a winter trip for later this month (January). I'm thinking of three different places; Trout Lake and a loop off of to the east then back out through trout lake, Cummings lake via the north arm trails then up to big moose and back down, or up the sioux hustler trail to shell then skii across little shell and make a loop back through pageant lake and on the trail again. Wondering what people do for a light weight winter camping trip and suggestions on what would be the most rewarding winter trip.
Thanks.
