Unas10: "Please describe the Kawishiwi Lake campground. Is it a state campground? How many sites? Fees involved? Hammock opportunities? Vehicles per site? Et\Thank you for any and all information." It"s a USFS site,,one primitive bathroom ,,no water. I love it...like car camping in the boundary waters.

I echo everything ducks said. I stayed at the dispersed site right across from the parking lot. No picnic table at the dispersed site but still very nice and close to the campground outhouse. Picture of site.

If you're wanting to hang one hammock, you'll probably be ok. If you're like my group and want to hang four, you'll want to bring a tent along. We didn't and ended up sleeping in the truck for the night.

site #3 site #2

I also like that the tree cover is thick enough that you don't see your neighbors in the site next to you.

I love it. Small and quiet. 5 sites that are each right on the lake plus 2 little renegade spots up the road a little that have been used many times and even have rock fire rings. I wouldn't want to spend a weekend at one of the renegade sites but they would be great for one night night before entering the bwca. 1 outhouse, no drinking water so either bring it, or filter from the lake. I think you could hammock in all 5 of the main sites...... It's been a few years since I've been there though. I used to take my father in law there every year while he was battling cancer. He loved the bwca but couldn't do a trip. So, the Kawishiwi Lake campground gave him the bwca with the ability to have a big tent with cot and the van right there if needed. I've stayed there close to 10 times.

Because it's small it does fill up, especially on weekends. It is a crap shoot and getting there early in the day helps. We used to get up there by 10am and only got turned away once. That time we went to Sawbill. But many times it was full by late afternoon.

an example of the crap shoot...... the last time I stayed there was about 5 years ago and the year after my FIL passed away. I stayed there one weekend in June with my wife and kids getting up there at 9:00am on a Friday morning. We got the last site and at least 10 groups drove through that day and were turned away. The next weekend I got up there on Saturday morning with my brother in law and nephew at 9:00am worried about getting a site because of the weekend before and the place was completely empty. Only one other group came all weekend.

Edit... free, first come first serve, and I think a 2 vehicle limit per site.

A lot of those answers are on the web site. Campground

IIRC there is an area near by - like across the road - that can be used for dispersed camping since you can wilderness camp anywhere in SNF.

Please describe the Kawishiwi Lake campground. Is it a state campground? How many sites? Fees involved? Hammock opportunities? Vehicles per site? Etc.

Thank you for any and all information.
