DanCooke: "We camped at the campsite directly across the lake from Duncan, where we came on to Partridge lake from. Someone had a camouflaged painted aluminum canoe chained up to a tree there under the snow. I set up my tent on Land- Too much fear of slush, Bill set up his on the lake. The campsite on the north end was deep in the Cedars- looked like an awesome site.

There is something special about winter camping and pulling a sled. I have done ski and Snowshoe Trips but the back compression is no fun on long travel days. I have skied the Lake route of the Kek Trail and Snowshoe walked from mid trail to Grand Portage with packs. I much prefer toboggans and Skis- anything but snowshoes.(some folks like them- too many memories of forced death marches I guess)

When I guided mid trail there was one winter I must have been to Stairway Portage 10 times or more. Do not person sled down the stairs- That is another story. It is steep and usually the stair treads are slightly exposed. We often skied down onto rose then did the long portage to Daniels than back To West Bearskin back to the Hungry Jack road landing,"

The campsite in the Cedars on Partridge is a awesome campsite, tucked into the Cedars with plenty of room for a couple of tents and from that site a trail leading to the border route trail. To fish you got to get out of the bay a little ways for it is fairly shallow. Also if others come to the lake there apt to stay at the south end.
Last winter camping on Clearwater we met a individual who comes up every year for a week and does day long ski trips in March. Like Rose to Mountain to Clearwater and back to West Bearskin his starting point. He traveled light and you could see he was in good shape.

Dan when I winter camped I was way down the far north end. Were you more to the left of the portage? Just curious?
There is something special about pulling a sled and skiing or snowshoeing in the winter and also the fresh air.
Talked to someone from my home town who camped on Duncan and than day tripped to Partridge and Rose lake a few weeks ago. The stairway portage would be one steep climb.

Awesome video! Never made that trip but its on my list. I love watching these videos when I can't be there myself. For me nothing compares to the solitude of the winter in the bwca, and the trout are a bonus.
