I heard the gunshots, too, three of them. About 11:10. I was reading in my tent, we were on Lower Pauness Lake. I figured it was a bear, too.

It’s most likely the same bear that is causing problems on nearby Shell Lake.

"

Could be.The night prior there were three gun shots about 15 seconds apart around 11:30 PM coming from that direction. The way the shots were fired and the time they were being shot at would make sense that someone was trying to deter a bear."

I would have thought it was illegal to carry a firearm into the BW? "

Firearms are permitted. The same laws apply in the BWCA as the rest of the state.

My friends who were with remembered the number tagged on the latrine was 14.

That would be campsite number 25. A very nice site on Loon lake.

I agree probably the same bear that is/was on Shell.

Just a heads up for those heading up to Loon Lake. We had a bear come into camp while we were out on a short day trip Sunday (6/10) and consume two days worth of food after it got our food bag out of the tree. All precautions were taken to hang the bag correctly and I don't know if there is anything that I would have done differently that would have prevented it. Don't know the campsite number but it was the 2nd site on the east side of the lake as you enter from Little Indian Sioux. All tents and hammock sleep systems were left alone. It only disturbed our water station and found the tree where we hung the food in a heavy duty SeaLine dry bag. Had to end the trip two days early but all is well otherwise.

bears happen,
