MattM: "ducks gave you great directions. I didn't find any remnants of an old building, but if you walk around the back of the northern most site, you will be able to find scattered pieces coal. My nephews got a real kick out of pretending to be coal miners when we had lunch at that site a few years ago.

However, you should be able to easily spot remnants of an old shack and equipment on left-hand side as you portage from Swan to Vernon.

I hope you enjoy Swan. Certainly one of my favorite lakes."

Thanks so much for the info. How far up the portage would you say the old shack is?

Yes, around June 1st the restaurant opened for business, but the doors don’t open until late afternoon. I thought she was open at 11:30am at the old location.

yeah, it's probably off from the road to the entry, but it'll get them close enough to find it.

I don't know when you were in the area, but I think she opened 3-4 weeks ago . . . ?

Hey Steve, I think the dotted line on map is a little off. It looks like the small parking area is a couple hundred feet past the gravel pit. (Although I’ve never stopped at that EP)

By the way, Pak’s wasn’t open when I was in the area, so still don’t know what’s on the menu.

You can also call it up on Google Maps IIRC, the parking area is small with only room for 2, maybe 3 vehicles. It's been several years, but if you took one step too many at the put in you could end up almost waist deep in muck .

No.... we didn't look for it. If I remember correctly from what I've read it's behind the northern most campsite.

Thanks so much

Any info on the railroad or old building on Swan lake?

While traveling on the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais you will cross a bridge (approximately 15 miles up the trail) over the South Brule River. Shortly after the bridge you will turn left onto South Brule Road. This dirt road will take you to a T at Lima Grade Road. Turn left at the T and very shortly after you get on Lima Grade Road you will turn right onto a small road that leads to the small parking area for Bower Trout.
