Thanks for a great trip report. We are looking forward to the Frost River this summer.

TomT: "Got it thanks! I'm not sure if I'll go through with it but it sure would be cool to try."
Try it at home first. Order a good but inexpensive pan here. I prefer to make on charcoal, but the oven works fine. At home use laker bits if available, but add fresh shrimp, mussels, clams, octopus, scallops, and any other little white fish you like.

If you follow this link and go about 3/4ths of the way down, you will find one of my very first posts on this forum. The only couple updates I'd make are (1) now I'd never consider dehydrated garlic, onion, and red or green peppers optional, though I often leave the mushrooms out, (2) sometimes I avoid cleaning an extra pan by doing the chorizo at the end of the garlic/onion/peppers and just toss the fish in raw with the rice about 10 minutes before its done, and (3) I've found adding some dry shrimp (available from many asian grocery stores) adds a lot. Dehydrated shrimp would too, but I've never tried that one. Real bomba rice, saffron, and chorizo really make the dish. Having a fairly wide pan to make it in really helps too, as it should be made as a very thin layer to be really good. Some days boil in bag is perfectly fine and convenient, but I love making paella in the wilderness - its a labor of love for me.

TrailZen: "A great report. Good to hear that the back issue was a one-time deal. Nice looking replacement paddle, too! A similar key incident in '75 or so prompted me to stash a spare key on most cars I've owned since then. Of course, when I started the practice keys were $0.75 or so. The crazy price for 'smart keys' ended the practice..." I hate those smart keys! Regular ones are bad enough! A few years back I was surfing in southern Morocco and realized at the beach I had a smart key for my rental car. My wet suit has a small zipper pocket with a d-ring specifically for keys, but what was I going to do with a key that cant get wet?? And where replacements would be days away minimum!

boonie: "Enjoyed reading your report, Jaywalker. I've been on most of the route except for the Frost River. Glad you didn't have any more back trouble. I've had back trouble in the past and it can just go on and on, and can be set off like yours was by the most innocuous thing. I'd pick up 50-60 lb. things all day, then turn to get a tissue and wham! That's a crazy story about the keys! "
Yeah, a crazy stupid story! 100% human error! I still can't believe my keys sat up there for 1/2 mile before falling off right where Andy was weed whipping the next day - that's just unbelievable. If you've never done the Frost, I do recommend despite the challenges I faced. Have to say, if the bugs had not been so bad and I had not lost two days to weather, I considered going down and doing the Louse River too but at the junction on Fente there was no way I was going to turn south to possibly face more of the same. Maybe next trip!

Jaywalker: "No, Tom, I've never been to the Q. In part it's a thought that I haven't seen all the BW yet, and part I've never been organized enough to do the whole RABC thing.
The mosquitoes bother me, but I just can not stand to see bunches of them biting my dog. I know you understand that. "

I've done northern entries to Quetico the last two years. If you have a passport it's easier than doing the RABC thing. Plus the daily trip fee is lower for the north.

Yeah, I doubt I would ever subject my dog to mosquitos and black flies and horse flies. I want to start going in early June but those will be group fishing trips with my 9X9 screen tent along.

Hey, is it possible for you to post your recipe for cooking lake trout on here? Thanks!

No, Tom, I've never been to the Q. In part it's a thought that I haven't seen all the BW yet, and part I've never been organized enough to do the whole RABC thing. Funny thing is at the time of this Frost River trip I was planning a 17 day trip to WCPP in August. I was 90% packed when the fires flare up up there, so I put it off. Really hoping next year.

And I've avoided June trips for some time too. I have done more January-March trips than June trips in the last 20 years. The mosquitoes bother me, but I just can not stand to see bunches of them biting my dog. I know you understand that.
TomT 12/08/2018 04:34PM
Very well done. Nicely written. The key incident is something I'm well aware of. There's so many little details when packing and unpacking at the beginning and end of trips that cause this to happen. I actually bring two keys and usually stash one under my truck somewhere in case I lose the one I'm carrying.

I haven't tripped in June since 1992 and the bugs were horrendous then. The net surely saved you and Regent. I don't have a big tolerance for biting insects so I only go in Aug or Sept. now.

I camped on Bologna Lake in 1986 and remember how remote it felt all along the Frost River. I saw moose as well. It's a nice route that you did and eating lakers is really good too.

I'm curious if you ever have been to Quetico?

Jaywalker 12/08/2018 04:14PM
No, thankfully no more back trouble on that trip, another 9 day trip in August, or since - thank goodness. And the paddle was an older and inexpensive BB that I just cut the slivered part off of and will relegate to duck hunting duty. Besides, I saw that as a sign I probably needed a nice new carbon fiber paddle!

I enjoyed reading your report. I like your bug net, great job on it. I can handle almost anything, but I draw my line at mosquito's. Have you had any more back issues? Were you able to fix your paddle?
