I was there in 1964 with the Explorer scouts and returned in late May, 2009. We entered via the creek--it wasn't bad (it was a high-water year)--a log jam at the entrance on Kawnipi, two or three beaver dams, one short portage midway and one at the entrance to LeMay. The campsite is big but there aren't a lot of level tent pads and it's on the west-facing side of the peninsula. Unfortunately it was brutally windy while we were there making it hard to fish and the campsite was exposed so it wasn't as much fun as it could have been. The ridge behind the camp is a great place to relax and enjoy the view. Good fishing for smallmouth and walleyes, but there were three canoes of daytrippers there when we arrived and they fished it hard. We exited via the portage out the southwest arm. It was hard to find although once we did it was marked with some faded orange plastic flags which was good because it was a very faint trail with lots of trees down, also steep and rocky in places and muddy in others. There was an article about LeMay years ago in the Boundary Waters Journal and the author mentioned the old trapper, I think he was called "Trapper Joe" and there was supposed to a cliff on the lake where he had chiseled his name but we didn't find it.

The campsite mentioned is huge and there was no sign of use that year. 200 yards north of the site we saw a moose in the water.
No sign of other people at all."

I was going to try to get in this year. Maybe you can give me more info.

Where is the creek you went up- give me a direction from the lake as my map show several creeks?

John"

I went into Lemay Lake in late June 2009. On the attached map, I've indicated with a yellow arrow the entrance to the creek that flows out of Lemay. Although the river's mouth was where the map indicated it should be, it was not exactly obvious, being clogged with downed trees. The mouth was also filled with a small, rocky rapids. You will have to portage your gear around the rapids and debris at the river's mouth.

The Lemay River was navigable, but by the time we reached Lemay, we had lifted the canoes over three rapids or logjams and one beaver dam. A single log nearly stopped us midway because there was no solid footing on the stream's muck bottom. Lemay River is surrounded by brush and has many turns.

I found a blaze on a tree that I think was at one time part of a trail to Lemay. There were so many trees down I could not follow the trail. The blaze was in a cove on Kawnipi that is south west of Lemay. The Lemay arm that points South West points at the cove.

What was the general water levels like at that time of year?
I heard there was a trappers trail into the lake - do you know anything about that?

You'd stay there because it's there. And because you'd have it all to yourself (most likely).

I've not stayed there, but there appeared to be a decent site on the big north/south point that splits the lake in two.

I was there a long time ago. It is very isolated and a good fishing lake with a decent campsite. Good for a day trip but i don't know why you would stay there over Kawnipi.
