I lived on Seagull for a few years and worked a few more summers there. Used to know the boat route and all the rocks to avoid on the way to the 105 as I’ve evacuated a number of folks like the guy one of you helped. The 105 is the superhighway but the way to go, especially if it is the first portage of a trip. A nice way to break in the body for portaging. On the way out of a trip walking the portage is a nice way to finish if the water is high enough. It’s a safety and comfort call though. The 20 should probably just be taken off the map. Not much is accomplished by it. In fact, if it was that brushy they probably have taken it off the “map”.
Rog is a nice alternative but adds the time you think it would. Used to be a nice trout lake but haven’t fished it in two decades. Doesn’t get hit hard.
If you search real hard you can still find the remains of the old resort south of the 105. Still findable post blowdown and fire. Prior to that you could them by searching for the lilacs.
I sure do love that lake. Thanks for spurring the memories.

I have portaged all 3 as well. Never again. Stick to the 105, it is by far the easiest route.

No. I didn't. But then it was so thick I could have tripped over a moose and not noticed it either.

djodts: "geotramper: "We did the short portage from Alpine to Seagull a few weeks ago and would not recommend it to anyone. Besides being a very narrow trail, there is also a steep rocky spot that was not fun to portage over. We actually ran into a pair of guys on the portage, one of whom had broken his ankle on the portage. As we were on our way out, our group helped to stabilize his ankle, get him into his canoe, and paddled out with him and his partner. Needless to say, would not do this portage again."

Funny, we went through 6/21. Probably about the same time you were there."

Missed you by a day. We were there on the 20th. You didn't happen to see a paper note staked to the ground with sticks and rocks on the Alpine side did you?

I've traveled thru Alpine twice, never considered the hop thru Rog or the shorter one."
that super highway saw it's share of row boats pre 1996 ,
late 80's -early 90;s Alpine was one of the best walleye lakes in the state , but with accessibility being able to motor seagull + word of mouth = pressure and has declined a bit , but still a descent walleye fishery. the hop through Rog will not save you time but a good experience ;)

shock: "I've done all three portages(rog) and the one along the Alpine River is little used and a fair extra distance of paddling. Many years ago, we paddled through it coming out. Going in, I recall a lot of clay, but yes, the 105 rod is the best choice. Flat and wide. "
I agree with this gentleman.

Few know that area better than he.

Has anyone traveled through both the 25 rod portage AND the 105 rod portage from Alpine lake to Seagull lake? I recently went through the 25 rod portage and am honestly wondering if the 105 rod portage would be easier. There was so much dense brush/saplings that we had to drag our canoe through that I'm thinking that quadruple the distance might actually be easier. That said and on another note...there was a couple ahead of us and the husband got out and walked his canoe through the rapids. I cannot say that I recommend that for safety reasons, but it looked much easier!

Thanks on advance for any insight
