The one trip I did up there, we had a decent post-trip lunch at a place called Iron Mine.

Eaten at the White Otter several times, and always good portions and tasty. Be sure to have gravy on your fries.
Have also stayed in the motel part. Clean average rooms. They do not have a senior discount.

I have found that wherever you go the food is adequate and portions too big to finish, but maybe that is just me! It is all decent and I usually do the White Otter for breakfast.

we like the Outdoorsman. Ate there several times this summer. Have eaten there since 1978. It is now temporally closed so the owner can go to his home in Greece for a few weeks. He and his wife now do this annually. It is downtown and is good. If it is closed you can eat at Little Darlings in the Atikokan Mall (old Hudsons Bay store). Two good alternatives to White Otter. If you are near French Lake, Quetico North is good for lunch.

ParkerMag: "Meals at Quetico College are good, and we've found the wildly/widely varied crowd somewhat entertaining. Michael's a bit of character himself!"
I would wholeheartedly agree with this, except you asked for Atikokan recommendations (and, of course, you have already departed for your trip). Quetico College School is very near the entrance to Dawson Campgrounds, so it would be a bit of a "hike." Lodging here is first rate also. In my opinion, this facility is, hands down, at the top of my list!

I stopped and had poutine at the bowling alley once. It was ok if you mainly wanted to pile on calories before some hard work in the cold, but I'd second all the other choices mentioned.

We were in Atikokan for several days this summer and would have to agree that the choices are few. The Outdoorsman isn't too bad, the White otter inn might be a bit better, but the First Round Draft sports bar and grill might be the best but isn't open on certain days(can't remember which ones). It is over by the golf course and campground. There are a few other places, none too bad, but none very special.

Bill, yes, the White Otter is an option. We stay at the White Otter Inn every trip to Q and the restaurant always seems to be busy.

Two other options are downtown - as luck would have it, they're next to each other.

PJ's Pizza & Pasta is pretty decent. The pizza is good and the beer is cold. I think they have sandwiches, too. Unfortunately, they're closed on Monday.

The Outdoorsman is a similar restaurant next door. Doesn't appear that either has a website for more information, but both have Facebook pages. They're open for breakfast, but not until 8:00am.

If you want an early breakfast, Robin's Donuts is right down the street from the White Otter and the Atikokan ranger station. Comparable (in some ways) to a Tim Hortons or Dunkin' Donuts.

Have a great trip into Q!

I'd second the White Otter recommendation. Had breakfast there last week. Staff was pleasant and the food was decent. We used to eat at the Outdoorsman, but that one seems to have closed.

It was an enduring recommendation - thank you!

Funny, I just read another Doig novel a couple months ago that I then lent to a friend (who’s going on this trip) who started on a Doig spree after that. Chasing the Sun - a really good one. :)

Hi Bill,

I'm afraid I'm no help pertaining to your question, but I'm excited to see your moniker again! I just packed a Doig novel for the trip tomorrow (Last Bus to Wisdom). I hope you have a terrific journey!

Thanks guys! Make decision making easier, at least :)

Very, very slim pickins' up there. DD pretty much nailed your only option.

White Otter Inn is fairly decent. I had breakfast there in June and have eaten dinner there on earlier trips.

HERE is a link to their menu.

We were staying overnight in Atikokan the night before our trip. Tomorrow night! Any recommendations for dinner and breakfast there?
