Great report Miss Molly! Thought that picture of Manny "arguing otherwise" was pretty hilarious!

Love those Maine maples...beautiful!

Dear Lena, I wish I could say that I could be your beloved, but alas, I am practically betrothed to your mommy, jillpine, who thinks me a braveheart, but I am truly a trueheart, thus my heart is taken.

Sadly not yours,

Manny

Here's a Lena story for Manny, because it's thundering here too.
Hey, Manny. My name is Lena and I'm also a shaking, quivering Braveheart. I'm a yellow lab, so my heart cells are a lot more numerous than my brain cells, or something like that. I get confused when JP starts in on big words other than yum-yums and walk-us! So, this thing called the caNOO??? You go in, you lay down, you float along and bite flies if MM forgets the fly spray stuff. Pro-tip: if you're bored and had enuf, then wait for Big Rock - the kind that poke through the water when you're passing by. As soon as you see it, crouch and pretend you're asleep. Then, summon the inner Braveheart and LEAP!!!! Don't look back, just LEAP! Because if you look back, you will see that everyone and everything also decided to go into the water. They are so SILLY! Love, Lena S.Q. Braveheart

Great trip report. I think you achieved your objective of making us feel as we were along for the trip. I appreciate the photos and your easy way of telling us all about it.

He was comfortable. I've written a couple articles about paddling with your dog for the first time and interviewed vets and trainers and then proceeded to do nearly none of what they advised, such as practicing with a canoe on land, practicing entering and exiting the canoe, practicing commands in the canoe, etc. I figured between his training, his trust in me, his life jacket, and his beloved, comforting bed, he'd be fine, which he was. However, if he were a big dog like a lab, with the weight to tip a canoe (and Tyler too!*), I think I might have followed the trainers' advice.
Here's a crummy pic of my former lab. She was the only dog allowed on Great Lakes Paddlers club trips around Ann Arbor. She'd just sit in front of me for hours...sometimes I'd have to brush snow off her or stop to empty the boat during downpours. We had swans, ducks and Sandhill cranes come within a foot of the canoe and she remained perfectly calm. One time I partially swamped while crossing an eddy line but she did a quick weight shift and saved us. I miss her.

PuffinGin: "MissMolly, thank you for sharing your lovely trip with me. Might be puny compared to others you've done both in time and distance but so full of the spirit of a much bigger trip. As someone who doesn't get out anymore, I thank you sincerely for posting it and for doing your trip. I will be working throughout the long winter trying to get myself ready to do some paddling next season, God and body willing."
Ahh, PG, you made my eyes shine.

jillpine: "Awww, tell that manny he's a braveheart and I love him too. They're cool dogs. "

They are characters! I'd tell him that you think he's a braveheart, but right now, he's hiding in the closet because of the the thunder. No lie. However, if you were here to tell him you love him, he'd emerge and his inner snuggle bunny would come out of the burrow too.

Jill, Manny asked me to post this photo for you because he wants you to see how pretty the blueberry fields will be in a couple weeks and also because he loves you because you think he's brave.

Thanks, Pete! It's nice to paddle a bit, even if it's not wilderness. A neighbor and I are going to another pond (That's what they call many lakes here.) on Sunday to fish for white perch and brook trout. If we can catch some, that'll be some yum in our tums! There's yellow perch there too, so that's three tasty species in the pond.

Autumn in New England... simply beautiful. Looks like you two had a great day. Thanks for sharing, Katie.

Brave Manny! I am really partial to this breed! The fall colors are so vivid. Loved the blueberry field! Thanks for posting this trip, MissMolly!

I've been thinking a lot about the thread in which someone posted that, with a little more focus on intentional thought and behavior, one could quite quickly settle into the wilderness mindset. The post has bothered me ever since, which often means there's an element of truth digging at one's soul (or ideologies). I need to get serious about this idea that a wilderness mindset is always within my reach. Because - the trouble is, you think you have time.

Spartan2: "What a fun trip report! Lovely fall colors. We don't have hardly any of that yet in Michigan, but in a few weeks we wll.

I like that little stream. Glad that you and your faithful companion had a good trip."

For some reason, the trees along that stream turned early. The trees in my yard are mostly green still. Again, you were my inspiration, so I'm glad you enjoyed it! Of course, Manny is too.

P.S. - I did this trip report because of Spartan2. I liked hers so much that I modeled mine after hers, with lots of photography and I tried to give you the sense that you along for the ride, as Spartan2 achieved.
