Ho Ho: "Spartan2 sent me a link to your report and I’m glad she did because it was really fun to read. Also, I’m still kinda floored that you guys are still single portagers. That goes in the “very impressive” column. As arctic and others said, it’s been wet and windy up here, really for the past month and a half, but sometimes trips like that live on in your memories the longest. And next summer is just around the (very loooooooong) bend . . . "

Thanks, Ho Ho--
Glad you enjoyed the report. We hope to be good for single-walking portages for a few more years, but that's something that can quickly change. We were fortunate this trip that we only had heavy rains when we were in camp. Paddling in a downpour can be miserable, but with the roomy tent and the ample dining fly space--no real problem.

Thanks, Boonie--It was a good trip, even though wetter and cooler than most of our trips.

tumblehome: "I infrequently read trip reports but this one caught my eye. And since I'm at home this weekend not wanting to spend two days in the rain under a tarp (postponed my weekend trip til next weekend) I decided reading about a canoe trip is almost as good.

Loved your trip report. You are a tough couple.
That rain can really take the fun out of a trip after the day after day wet clothes and tent. But you survived! Thanks for sharing.
Tom"

Thanks, Tom--I'm glad you enjoyed the report. Even with the rain & wind the trip was a great one. We saw new territory and new pictographs. The only really negative aspect of the trip was spending two days in the Outback with wet gear on our way home...

I'm a bit jealous of folks who are close enough to Canoe Country to make weekend trips--that must be great. Enjoy next weekend--I hope the weather cooperates.

Spartan2: "Loved your trip report--great photos, too!

Last year I purchased a Nikon Coolpix W300 and it is really nice little waterproof camera. You can take photos in the rain, (I wear it on a lanyard around my neck and if I am canoeing I tuck it into my PFD. It will also take nice underwater photos. Easy to use, and I think it takes nice pictures.

Congratulations on your anniversary!"

Thanks, Spartan2--
I didn't take enough photos this year--thanks for the W300 recommendation. Just looked at the specs and it sounds very nice. The fact that it has a macro mode appeals to me, as many of my photos are of flowers, etc, at close range. I hope I never need (or test!) the "waterproof to 100 feet" feature, but that should ensure that my current rainy-day camera concerns aren't an issue.

arctic: "Loved the trip report! It's been a wet fall up here, and you two certainly experienced that. An excellent trip despite the weather.

The route between Silence and Trant has been one of my favorites for decades. Lots of old-growth pines in there.

There are also some nice pictographs on the cliff face below the multi-leveled, island campsite on Montgomery...

The portage into Heronshaw is tucked in a weedy bay and easily missed... but the campsites there are not that great.

"

Thanks, Arctic--
Every canoe trip is good! (Well, there was the trip when we wrapped an aluminum canoe around a rock in whitewater we had no business on...) And we've had much wetter trips:

We'll certainly do the Silence/Trant route again--gotta see those pictos on Trant, and we always enjoy routes with fewer people. Thanks for the Montgomery picto info--our pictograph guide was published in 1984, and does not include the island site on Montgomery--we'll add that to our marked-up map. Thanks, too, for the Heronshaw information--we played around the weedy bay a few minutes, but couldn't see the portage trail and felt we were wasting daylight by searching just to avoid one portage, so continued on Kahshapiwi Creek...

Driftless: "Nice trip, despite the weather! Congrats on 47 years!"

Thanks, Driftless--
It's always a good trip! Especially when planning a trip so far in advance, Canoe Country paddlers can't pick & choose their weather--we have to be happy with what Mother Nature throws at us. That philosophy has helped us make those 47 years good ones!

Minnesotian: "
That looked like a good trip. Thanks for sharing.

Good decision not to go see the Montgomery Lake pictographs. I bushwhacked to that spot two years ago and if I didn't have a GPS with the location roughly marked, I don't know if I would have ventured down there. When I went through, there was a rough path but it petered out pretty quick. I took one route to the images, but took a different route back.

Great pictographs though. I do recommend getting there someday. "

Thanks, Minnesotan--
We'll head back to find the Montgomery pictos someday. Our friends at Piragis said high-water times are best, and like you they advised going with good GPS coordinates of the site.

Thanks, Seven--I'm glad you enjoyed the trip report. We enjoyed the loop even though it was a bit shorter than we'd hoped.

Beth"

Thanks so much, Beth. The loop was a great one even though we missed nearby pictographs while on Trant and didn't get even close to our initial 'challenge' points--maybe next year!
