10/08/2019 09:34PM Absolutely agree. Now I need to christen the canoe by catching a fish! Hopefully the first of many trips with Winston! |

10/08/2019 09:15AM Agree 100% why build it if not to use. After the couple scratches you get over it. |

10/08/2019 08:23AM Loved the report. We saw a cedar canoe and on of my friends mentioned he wouldn't take one to the Boundary Waters for fear of scratching it. I completely disagree. You spend all that time building it, gotta use it. |

10/07/2019 09:06PM The pic of Winston snoozing with his chin on the yoke is absolutely precious! |

10/06/2019 06:56PMbridge4life: "It is in that ballpark of 70 pounds. I weighed it once and forgot the exact weight. I used 8oz. fiberglass, ash for the gunwales and yoke, and cherry for the decks and seats. All nice, heavy, hardwood additions! " And I used all hard maple and ash for my furniture. 6 oz glass in and out. They are an accomplishment, regardless of their weight. |

10/06/2019 05:33PM 70 pounds? My 16' Merlin only weighed 51 and I thought I had done something wrong. I was shooting for under 45. Regardless - the view from that canoe is so appealing. There are few things that offer that satisfaction when you know every single inch of the canoe intimately. Totally sweet. |

10/06/2019 03:42PM I seem to manage in the winds with my Ranger (which too is a Bear Mountain design) but it is pretty hard to paddle when it is too light in weight. Even with weight, it can be a pain at time to get enough forward momentum into a strong headwind. I have to owe it to the bent shaft paddle I have. BIG difference that a traditional guide paddle. I too had an unheated garage to work with when building mine. Maybe someday I will get one with heat! |

10/06/2019 09:06AM Curious about your canoe. I have a Prospector Ranger 15' that I built, Bear Mountain Boats design. Simply terrible in the wind, especially solo. Too much rocker, even trimmed it weather vanes, even in current. More suited to streams and small rivers. I know what you mean about the rocks and such, just makes you cringe at first. But they all but indestructible and are easily repaired. Took me about 2 yrs to finish (unheated garage). Still love mine though. yours looks good. Love your dog too, I've got a shepherd but she won't go anywhere near getting in the canoe. |

10/06/2019 08:22AM Nice report. I love that entry point. After taking "a little time off" I hope to get a dog to trip with. We've always had dogs, but with 5 kids also they were never disciplined enough for tripping. Yours looks Like a nice boy. I also paddle a stripper so I know the feeling as you bounce on the rocks. He boat makes me look good. Even though I didn't build it. Hope you have many more journeys. Pete |
