Some great sites on Caribou, but it can get crowded. That entire loop can, but it is really a pretty area. Really good fishing on Caribou as well; walleye, smallies and northerns. A day trip up to Clearwater would be worth the work. IMO, one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire area.

Stayed twice at Hungry Jack last year; great people and that is where I will stay from now on whenever I am on the Gunflint. Like others have said, Bearskin makes sense given your loop. Another beautiful place is Clearwater, and they will shuttle you and your gear to E. Bearskin for no cost (at least that was true last summer).

I've gone with that outfitter before and stayed in their cabins and woukd do so again. My first BWCA trip was thru them. We did E Bearskin -> Alder -> Canoe -> Crystal and then back out again after a few days and a day trip up to Pine to see Johnson Falls.

Maybe in reverse though..."

There's a super nice campsite on Alder just past the little island where I was entertained by an otter family, and also on the portage to Conchu Lake for a side trip.

What loop are you looking at for East Bearskin? I toyed with Crocodile this year but chose Slim Lake instead. I was looking at a two areas for next year and E Bearskin was one of them but I know very little about the area.

I'd echo Bearskin Outfitters. I've never used them, except their launch, but the place looked nice and you can't beat the convenience.

The cabins are nice, primitive with table & firepit outside and located near restroom bldgs. Have not stayed in one but was able to check-out an unlocked/unoccupied cabin when I was in site #29 last Spring. Definitely an upgrade from confines of a tent.
East Bearskin Outfitters manages E. Bearskin campground for the FS. and Recreation.gov for online reservations.
tip: Alder Cabin is the closest to the only water spigot in the campground.

Hungary Jack Outfitters is located about 2 miles from the parking lot for EP 60 to Duncan lake. Duncan is a short paddle and then a reasonable up and down portage from the put in. I think 80 rods. Parking seems adequate for that entry. HJO has real mattresses which you would buy for your home if you like quality, thick, flippable, and firm in your mattress. A light cold breakfast is served around 7:00. They can out fit your needs, although I only stayed in one of their bunkhouses before and after our trip..

Thanks Mocha!

I did consider staying in the little camper cabin on the lake the night before! And I feel kind of embarrassed since a simple google search would have told me this.

Thanks for being my google Mocha. ;-)

E bearskin outfitter makes the most sense since you can paddle right from their beach. They are very nice people who know the area very well.

We almost always go out of Ely, and own all of our own gear, but our friends will need to rent a canoe/paddles & equipment drop off. That's it.

Who is your favorite go-to outfitter on the Gunflint if you were putting in at E.Bearskin? Sounds like Bearskin Outfitters has equipment + lodging right on the lake, so that sounds like the best option, unless someone else has something better.

Overnight accomodations? Thinking of staying in the camper cabin the night before...

How's fishing in that area? Thinking of doing "the loop"...

Thanks.
