For close lakes a hub style fish house works well. Bring a portable buddy heater and some propane and your set. About $250 for house and heater. Eskimo quickfish 3 is what I use.

Sounds good.

Arcola: "Can't answer to the lakes, but depending on how you feel, I'd loan you a pulk and stove. No charge. Kent"

Kent, that’s a very generous offer and I might very well take you up on it. I’ll get back to you when I have firm plans for a trip. Thank you.

Jan or Feb. My work schedule varies widely and I get my monthly schedule around the 15th of the month for the following month so I’ll see what my Jan schedule looks like in a week and a half and see if something works. If not, I’ll try Feb.

Thanks for the info. I’ll check into it.

A few trout lakes that should be easily accessible for winter travel......

Clearwater Lake EP #62.

Sea Gull Lake EP #54

Snowbank Lake EP #27

Pine Lake EP #68

Stone Harbor in Grand Marais should be able to set you up with any equipment you may need. (if you choose to enter on that side of bwca?)

When do you plan to go?

Would like to do my first winter trip with lake trout fishing as a priority. I looked into renting hot tenting gear (tent, stove and pulk) from Piragis but it gets pretty pricey for even a 4 day trip so may cold camp with my current camping gear. Need advice on lake trout lakes that I can reach in a day (I snowshoe and will pull a sled of some type based on how much gear I take). Also any other options as far as gear rental? I'm not opposed to partnering up if someone is interested depending on circumstances.
