No cell phone reception in that area!

The folks at Rockwood are great. My poor attempt at humor. I stayed at their bunkhouse in May and left my truck parked there rather up the tote road. Kept them from finishing some spring clean up, my bad not theirs.

We just got back from there on the 26th. We stayed on Gaskin, but wish we would have stayed on Horseshoe. Fishing was slow due to being fairly windy. Easy portages, but there was some traffic.
Also be aware that there is a fire ban that went into effect today.

Campsite 771 on Vista is one of the most beautiful campsites I've been to.

merlyn, that surprises me about your experience with Rockwood! They were the nicest folks ever and gave us exact directions on how to go from their beach landing to the EP and how to recognize to come back.

Both on our way out and back in they greeted us on shore, and helped us load/unload our canoe. Maybe they're seasoned and salty now though.

Great info from everyone! Thanks!

Horseshoe is one of my favorite lakes to base camp on with day trips to Gaskin , Allen and Vista The portages to those lakes are short allowing you to spend the whole day exploring and still get back to home base easily. Short but very rocky into Gaskin and Vista. Allen is nothing special but I have had good luck fishing just past the narrows leading up to the portage from H/shoe and watched a cow moose eating in the water close to the portage.
Twice now I have had a family of otters check me out on Lizz so have your camera ready.

The folks at Rockwood are great as long as you park in the right spot ( the scolding I got in May from parking in the lot rather than on the road may have scared me for life. LOL )

If your a traveler Omaga and Hensen are cool too and are also a fairly easy day trip. The only lake I was disappointed in was Swamp Lake, I took a side trip there thinking the fishing would be good but I could hear road traffic from the Gunflint trail, not what I wanted in the Bwca.

Went in the last week of May, stayed on Vista & Horseshoe.

Site 771 on Vista was awesome! Great view, felt like the trees were towering over that lake.

Site 673 on Horseshoe was also really nice. Was very large you could have a huge group there. Open areas and tree covered areas with a few landing spots. The lake was pretty cool, found some walleyes just west of the southwestern campsite where the lake has a little "depth".

I was there about a month ago. Horseshoe lake is a great place for seeing moose.
Great area. Moose country. Quintessential bwca. Smaller lakes are enjoyable. Tons of loop options.

We just came out Lizz on the 23rd. It has been a few years since we had been through there, practically no mud this year easy portages. Mosquitoes were hungry

We literally just switched our entry point from Mudro to Lizz because we wanted cooler weather. We usually plan months in advance . lol! This will be an interesting trip! 2 weeks. We’re open to all suggestions.

Make sure to plan for some crowds. Its a very popular entry point. Campsites fill fast and portages can be crowded. I think I've been through that entry 3-4 times on overnight and day trips and I've always had plenty of company.

How far do you plan to go?

We’re heading to Lizz and Swamp Lake entry point on July 4 for 2 weeks. Please send any tips or suggestions for the area. Thanks!
