My understanding, which have in an email from a ranger with another one copied, is you can cross the corridors between the three separate parts. Basically, cross either the Gunflint Trail and the Echo Trail. No purchases, mechanical devices, resupply, nor overnights. So yes to 7 and 19. But not from Moose Lake 25 to North Kawishiwi 29. And you don't have to use entry points.

This raises an interesting question - is there a list somewhere that tells us what the allowable corridor crossings are?

For example, I would assume - but do not know for sure - that one can cross between Stuart River (19) and Big Lake (7), if you did not originate at one of those EPs. But where else?

cowdoc: "Its allowed if part of a longer route......say Crab entry up through LI S south and cross Echo Trail as part of route continuation. But, to start a trip at LIS south and cross back across ET to LIS north is not allowed to start a trip."

That was my understanding after a lot of discussion - at Canoecopia snd by phone and email - with USFS.

Well, guess that settles that.

Thanks all for the replies!

Thinking of going the same way via the little vermilion lake EP or maybe plan for a week or two out when EP 14 has open permits

Get a crane lake permit and paddle or get a tow

Agreed, not allowed to start at LIS South and head north. You can cross there if you're on a longer trip (either direction) You cannot start on one side of the road and head the other way

Note that recreation.gov states that one should choose LIS North EP 14 for travel north of the Echo trail.

Porkeater: "You would be exiting the wilderness and re-entering, which would require a separate permit. (There are some locations where this is permitted; this is not one of them). "

I'm not disagreeing but I have an email from USFS that says I can. Its a corridor crossing. Lots of cases if differing interpretations from different USFS sources.

As I understand it, cowdoc is 100% correct for EP9 - it's south only.

However, I believe you can use that portage to head north if you originated at a different entry point, like EPs 1, 4, 6, 7, 8...can anyone confirm or refute this?
cowdoc 04/16/2021 04:11PM
You're not allowed to do it.

Hi all,

Question about the location of the little indian sioux EPs (14 - North and 9 - South):

I'm trying to head up North towards Loon/LLC and have done so through EP 14 before, but those permits are gone for the week I'd like to go. EP 9 has an open permit for that week, but i wanted to see how feasible it is to put in there and still head north on the little indian sioux. The permitting website shows the EP in a pretty different location than the Map on the site here (see pics; on the permit website it seems like 9 is a good mile or so from 14, but on the BWCA.com map it looks like theyre pretty close and theres a pretty short portage from 9 to 14 to boot).

Which map is more accurate? Has anyone been in on both and can speak to whether or not its possible/easy enough to start at EP 9 and head north?

Thanks,

Matty T
